Managers: This thread is for your (optional) overall comments on the draft. You may use the questions below to structure your comments, or simply say what you want to say.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

2. What were your favourite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

(yes, I ripped off Toral's thread).

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

I did more predraft research than the last few years, using online projections to predict value based on our league settings. That’s what happens when you come in 15th place in RIBC. I found it strange that Jose Altuve was not at the top of those rankings, so I tried multiple projection sites. Each time, the same results. For better or worse, I decided I would follow those rankings as best as I could and see how the season went. Giancarlo Stanton was ranked 2nd in all the projections I used, with only Trout ahead of him.

I mapped out a rough idea of hitter and pitcher targets through the early rounds. I wanted 4 hitters in my first 5 picks. I targeted 2 closers in rounds 6 and 7. I wanted 7 hitters in my first 11 picks. I told myself I would be flexible but those were pre-draft plans. I paid less attention to position scarcity than in the past and had planned on using rounds 10-11 to draft 2 MI.

I mostly stayed on course, but I did not take back to back closers (though still ended up with 2) and I ended up drafting my second MI earlier than expected. Part of that was a reaction to the way the draft was developing and part of it was the allure of Ozzie Albies in round 7. I hope that pays off. I’m glad I waited until round 14 to fill my 3rd MI and truthfully, if I knew Brandon Crawford would have been available I round 19, I would have used my 14th pick on someone else. Who, I’m not sure, and looking over the draft results still doesn’t make that obvious, but I feel that the likely outcomes for Russell and Crawford are closer than a 5 round difference.

2. What were your favorite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

Based on value, compared to the other RIBC drafts, I got good value with Olbies at 7.05, Cory Knebel at 6.12, Delino Deshields at 10.12. As a fan, I like being able to root for Syndergaard.

Do overs: see above regarding Addison Russell in round 14. I was also the earliest to draft Brandon Belt (my rankings love the pick). I likely could have waited a round and gone with Suarez in round 11, Belt in 12. How things would have continued to change from there is too much for my brain to process at the moment, but it intrigues me.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

For the first time, I also ran a spreadsheet that tracked standing for all teams based on projections. Once we got past the starting players it became less than perfect, but the spreadsheet likes Philsphan, graydog and RoboGuru.

My astute and old fashioned “eye test” also likes sanfordors (but the Bird, Perez injuries stink) and daleteekz.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

The lack of quality starting pitchers. I attributed this during the draft to my uncustomary drafting of closers, but it seems like it was a consistent remark in our draft and the other RIBC leagues as well. I wish I was smart enough to say that I had prepared for this before the draft, but I had not and was forced to adapt on the fly. It led to drafting Chad Green earlier than I expected. I imagine this also led to graydog’s no SP strategy, which also surprised me.

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

I would be more prepared for the SP shortage before the draft, as it threw me off for a few rounds and caused a mental panic. I noted in my Luis Castillo rationale that I hated the pick. That was when I still thought that there were quality ratios for starters throughout the draft. In retrospect, I am now happy with the pick, as the buzz around Castillo makes him a high upside pick. At the time, my fear was that I had wasted the pick on a SP when plenty others were still available with Castillo’s projections. I’ve changed my mind on that. Still, I would have liked to have been prepared for that before the draft and I would enter a new draft with a different plan today based on that knowledge.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

As usual my plan was to take who I felt the best available player was at a given round, adjusting for positional needs the further into the draft we go. For the most part I was able to execute this plan, though positional needs pushed me away from 'best available' sooner than I would have wanted. This also pulled me a bit away from the SP I wanted as other managers were much more aggressive with SP than I thought they would be. I found often the best available SP was 7-10 players down my list.

2. What were your favourite picks? What picks would you like to do over?
For me personally getting Trout was fun. Since he's entered the league I've only ever owned him two other times in all the various leagues I manage. I also really like my Moustakas pick. I think he's under-rated and I think he's going to outperform 5-6 other 3rd basemen ranked above him.
I also like Xander Bogaerts for a bounce back season.
For do-overs instead of Andrus I think I would have preferred a pitcher like Greinke, Keuchel or Archer.
For other teams I think Miguel Cabrera (5.13 TeamRJ) and Cesar Hernandez (14.02 Loki) are nice low-risk gambles. Cabrera just has to not be injured and Hernandez simply needs to do what he did last year. Everybody is talking about Scott Kingery but how is he going to find regular at-bats at 2nd base when the guy blocking you had a .370 OBP, +.400 slg and double digit steals last year? Phillies are crowded with young talent, but they will find a spot to keep Cesar in the line up. Or trade him to a team that needs a solid every day 2nd baseman.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

This is honestly tough this year. People should by now that I have no problem voicing an opinion even if somebody else may not like it. So when I say no team really stands out as a favorite you know I'm not just ducking and hiding from a tough question.
There are teams stacked in pitching but lacking in hitting. There are teams stacked in hitting but lacking pitching. There are teams with obvious power bats but completely missing any meaningful steals or run producers. There's even a team that should run away with steals/runs but is very questionable in rbi's, slg and possibly obp. No one team ever seems great across this board in this format but there is usually one that seems at least solid. I just don't think so this year. If I had to pick my top 5:
Roboguru
Tilt
Uptown Bombers
Khahan
Sanforders
But honestly I'm not so confident in any team (my own included) to say 'this is the team to beat.'

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
Starting pitching is pretty deep this year. That's why I was surprised to find such slim pickings by round 10 or so. Typically there are some nice sleepers and solid SP3's out there in the early teens. But it just didn't feel that way this year. I think the elite tier, tier 1 and tier 2 pitchers are more bountiful which gives the illusion of deeper pitching. But there seem to be less tier 3 pitchers.

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

Taken a pitcher in round 5.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

Five players I wanted with the 7th pick, get one of them. Take a top 5 SP with round 2 pick if it falls to me as SP is always a problem for me and I lean towards taking hitters. Balance, get as many 4-5 category hitters as possible and avoid the specialists......As always look at high floor early and high ceiling in middle and late....Follow the OPS, the counting stats take care of themselves..... Dont worry about position scarcity early just take the numbers. Get 2-3 closers with at least one "stud" as i cannot find them in the year unless i get lucky.

I got Votto with the 7th pick and happy there. he was my 5th ranked player. SP did not fall to me but did focus on OPS. The rest of the strategy was a mess and i constantly felt like i was playing catchup. Got one good closer and nothing else. Got ok SP but was not prepared for the lack of options i always seemed to see at that position. I like my team, my offense should be top 5-6 with my weak area in my OF and that is easiest to fill as we go along......but my pitching will have to outperform to be a top 5 team.

2. What were your favourite picks? What picks would you like to do over?

Fav: 6.10 Trevor Story, was starting to look at filling positions and the drop at SS was right after this. watching others get a starting SS later made me feel good about this pick.....10.10 Jose Berrios as my SP3 he will prob be my SP1-2 watching the caliber of SP i ended up with at the end makes me happy to have him here esp as I got him the latest of any other RIBC league by a full round....11.07 Eugenio Suarez passed on him and other 3B few rounds before and thought it would be sinkhole all year but was able to get him here and really make my draft feel a lot better

Do-Overs: Ohtani in round 8...Thought this would be one of my favorite picks and still might end up being great value but I was panicked about SP depth here and took a big risk this early, was latest in any RIBC league though by a lot.....Eric Thames in round 12...didnt do my homework he is a platoon player at best this year...good guy to have but not there.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
Everyone has significant holes and everyone has to have players surprise them. Some teams have advantages in pitching but hurting on offense and vice versa... nature of the beast in a competitive deep league.

Did not run a full draft simulation for the first time in years but by the eye test i like Phisphan and of course Uptown and Khanan who i am always chasing and competing with.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
SP went quick but so did RP. Odd. Graydog punting SP. So punting wins, basically K's as well, should dominate ERA and WHIP but did he get enough saves to make it profitable? I am excited to find out

5. If you could start the whole thing over, would you do anything differently?

Be better prepared. i was distracted and woefully unprepared this year constantly looking at my software and wondering who players were and then picking someone and discovering later i should have taken someone else but didnt know them. basically had no sleepers in mind and was flying blind late. This league is too good to expect to win if you arent prepared.
