The Poli Baseball League Constitution
Rule Changes
In order for a new rule or rule change to pass, we need a majority the league (not voters) to vote yes. This is currently 8 of 14. The manager who proposes the rule should make a reasonable effort to publicize that there is a vote going on. If a majority do not vote for the proposal within a week, the proposal fails.

Waivers - Continual Rolling List - 1 day waiver period
Trade Deadline - Closest Sunday to August 31st
Trade Review - League Votes

Player must be in the Yahoo database at the time he is picked in the
supplemental draft.
No time limit initially, unless deemed necessary
Straight Draft, Reverse order of standings

To be conducted BEFORE the Supplemental Draft
Under 300 AB's or 125 IP to be draft eligible
Any player at any level (as long as they are under limits) can be drafted as prospect. College, International, Little League etc.
You can retain up to 5 prospect eligible players from one season to next
There are 8 rounds in the prospect draft - minus a pick for each prospect you carry over.
ALL teams are entitled to EXACTLY 8 prospects by the end of the prospect draft. NO TEAM will be allowed to have any number other than eight prospects at the end of the prospect draft.
Prospects may be called up in-season and can be sent back and forth to prospect list until the end of the season in which they exceeded the stated prospect limits. As with our new rule, managers can keep prospects for the entire season in which they exceed their stated prospect level limits. So, if your prospect hits the limit in May, you may still hold his rights as a prospect until the beginning of the following season. Prospects may be called up or sent down anytime in-season or off-season prior to keeper declaration. If called up and made an MLB keeper, prospects will lose their prospect status.
Prospect rights may be traded.
Prospect picks may be traded as long as receiving team has enough spots to make the draft pick at time of draft.
You can trade for as many prospects as you like - however you'll need to have 5 or less at the time of the Prospect Draft

Some housekeeping:

-the new MLB rule changes will absolutely affect stats and their values to teams. Keep that in mind as you look over your keepers and make draft plans.
Once we get a full league checked in, I'll sign us up for Draftime. In the meantime I'll update prospects lists (though everyone should be checking their own prospects anyway). Hope to have a tentative schedule for keepers, drafts, etc early next week.

I show George Kirby with 130 career IP. You can only keep him as a MLB keeper, not as a prospect. Aaron Ashby has 139 IP, and Roansy Contreras has 95 IP on my spreadsheet.

A manager cannot keep a player as a prospect keeper simply because the player was on their active roster at the end of the season.
Such players can, however, be kept as a regular keeper.

If I recall correctly, the reason we did that, 20 years ago, was since it was a keeper league, it was a way to help weaker teams that didn't have solid keepers. It was a way to give them an advantage over currently stronger teams. It was specifically done because it's a keeper league.
Some keeper leagues only let you keep a player for 3 years, 5 years,, or charge a higher "salary" every year you own the player. In this league we just did the non snake draft.

We could drop the IP limits to something more reasonable. Even with a couple of heavy streamers (me included) nobody but 1st and 2nd were able to even come close to that limit. Maybe 1200.
I tried to trade for a few starters mid-season, but I would have crippled my bats. Asking prices were too high.
There just aren't enough SP arms for people to reach 1400 unless they stream.
And nobody is going to stream unless the are crazy (me) or they are in it.

#69: And the game has changed so much the last 5-6 years so that SP no longer go deep into the games. In addition, some teams go to 6 man rotations, which means the ace of the staff will lost 5 starts in a season.
I stream a lot, too, but when the average SP gets 5 innings now it might make us have to re-think whether our categories are accurately catching real MLB play.

QS still a thing? Fewer QS than SV nowadays, and half the leagues use S+H now too, most who didn't go to QS, as we did, are glad they didn't.
Of course you could argue that SB is a rare stat that needs to go away too. Lots of possibilities for next year.

In another league, i didnt mind the move from W to QS. It was a bit weird at first as relievers became less relevant. But then the move to expand Sv to Hld+sv brought them back in line again.
And if you bring down the max IP, it still enables elite relievers to hold their place due to the high K/9 they bring.

You guys and your insistence that you should not have to pitch 9 innings in a game. 1400 IP in a season is roughly a full season of IP. Just like 162 games for every position on the field, you have to field a full team to participate in MLB. You forfeit the game if you don't have players on the field, right?
Cam, the argument that there aren't enough good pitchers is falling on deaf ears. Define good enough. If by not good enough, you mean not as good as another manager has, well there will be differences from one team to another. That's a given. All I can say is, draft better and quit giving up good pitchers to chase a streaming strategy.
The only argument that I find credible when people are having issues with achieving an IP minimum is that they need more P positions cause they can't start enough, or they just want more BN and/or IL slots.
The root of the whining is usually based in a team philosophy of tank and ignore your team for the season. Are you even playing then? Or are you just blowing off your team for years, until you have cheated the parity system enough to make a run.

I find that they only way I ever pay attention on a daily basis is when I stream.
That's peak engagement.
For me.
Comparing fantasy IP and AB to real MLB teams is a fools errand.
I find the trade off to be either a positional deficit or a innings deficit. I would much prefer the later.
If you want to compare it to MLB, would you leave SS empty? Ever?

I once played in a fantasy basketball league with a bunch of early AI researchers.
You would have loved it. They spent massive amounts of time writing programs taking into account defense and synergistic effects of certain point guards with certain types of power forwards, based on real-time stats.
Do you know what happened? It collapsed in on itself. No one could create a strategy, because no one except maybe the programmers (but I have my doubts) understood how it worked. Everybody quit. Coincidently the year I drafted Lebron James.

By comparison, the median of the total saves by team was 41. Figure total saves for MLB is about 1200. Just pointing out how the QS is becoming as rare as a save. Wins is simple, the average is 81, the total for 30 teams is 2430. Don't quibble over unplayed games please.
Median SB per team was 85. Figure 2500ish for total SB for the league.
What is the rarest stat? Where is the league headed? Inquiring minds want to know.

IDK, overall im happy with the categories we use.
Been in some weird leagues that end up with about 16+ categories overall. What we use keeps it simple and is fairly well aligned to industry, which makes ranking sites a lot more relevant.

With rare stats, there is a bit of unicorn hunting that goes on. Maybe you like that or maybe you don't.
We've talked alot about S vs S+H on this forum. Just trying to put some perspective on other "rare" counting stats we use.
Sorry to place some knowledge on ya, revelations can be confusing and disorienting. Try sitting and taking deep breathes. Don't try this at home, we are highly trained professionals.

When you have both QS and S (vs W and S+H) you are reducing the value of many pitchers, both starter and reliever. You begin to chase the rare stat more, like the deer hunter who sees a unicorn through the thicket.
Choices have consequences. Just like it when people are making informed decisions.
FYI, I can live with the choices, even if they aren't mine.

I have been a vocal critic of QS, but not because it is rare. It is not. I dislike it because it isn't a good measure of quality. It reflects age and managerial temperment. Somebody who throws 5 2/3rds shutout ball with 10Ks shouldn't get nothing.

I dont mind either way. The other argument to that 5 2/3'rds pitcher, are the ones who go 7-8 innings of 0 run ball and get nothing too, because their team didnt score either.

2019 was the first year we used QS over W. I believe we actually voted on it in 2018, not sure. I recollect we created rules about how to do voting, and we even had a defector or two as a result of the QS vote.
I was an advocate of the switch at the time. It seemed to me that if Wins and QS were about the same in number per year, then why punish a guy who lost 1-0 to Cy Young, and not give him credit for a good game. Why reward some lucky reliever who just happened to be the pitcher of record when a team mate hits the dinger.
Not many starting pitchers were pitching under six innings at the time, unless they were having a bad day. Did anybody see the pitch count change coming?
Well it came fast and inside. Just as we were digging in at the QS plate, here comes the brush back pitch. A bullpen full of pitch counters to ruin it.
Worthy of a vote to return to Wins?

Yeah, neither W or QS are perfect. I like the capriciousness of the impact on offense on Ws, but maybe I'm just a fuddy-duddy.
I can also plan for it more in drafting. If a pitcher is on a team with poor offense, you downgrade them. I suppose you could do the same with the likelihood that younger pitchers are gonna get pulled, and some managers are more likely to have low pitch-counts, but I don't.

The more I think about it, the more convinced that we should cut the maximum IPs. Right now, just about the only way to max is through heroic streaming efforts or spending far too many slots on (usually very mediocre) starting pitchers.
That means that the only people who come close are those who actively stream for a good portion of the season. Usually only 2 or 3 managers who are actively in the hunt.
I propose we cut the to a more reasonable 1200 IP for 2024.

Minor point as I said but for sake of cleanliness I think it makes more sense to start at 0 when adding guys we drafted doesn't really reflect a move in the traditional sense, and no reason to not reset?
Also, if we ever move towards implementing a max moves cap like we just did in 8 Men Out, better the numbers be accurate.
Also, what's up with Brady Singer? Art drafted but Mud just added?

PD, looks like we both responded to this same time.
I used to balance pick trades by giving up the last pick of the guy who gained a pick.
So, if player A receives a pick from player B, then player B gets player A's 15th round. If later player A receives another pick, this time from player C, then player C gets player A's 14th pick. etc.

Mud has now added Jordan Montgomery who Bobo drafted but didn't pick up. Might I suggest people pick up the players they drafted? I'd also suggest people double check the Draftime page before adding obvious players like Singer and Montgomery who show as available, but I suppose at some point the drafter forfeits ownership?

The solution is simple. When people do this we just put a stop on their ability to pick up FAs for a week. Second time they do it, its two weeks, etc.
They don't like it, they quit and the problem goes away.

Bobo, I am pretty sure if you use the app, you don't see the "K". You have been doing this all season. I recommend you have a complete list of protected prospects handy if you need to use the app.
More importantly, if you can't believe your luck that a young guy you covet is available, chances are that he isn't. Check first.

Real simple, if a guy is on the list, don't touch him unless he belongs to you.

I moved Bradley to the bench for today, but nothing will stop Morgan from putting him back in his lineup other than the e-mail I sent him.

Somehow Taxman slipped into second place at the end squeezing out a point from the RBI spot. And despite a blizzard of moves by WG the last few days he was overtaken by artofmonk on the very last day. (which means next year he's got a slightly better draft position, so look out).

As always it helps when your players don't get injured and it's pretty incredible how healthy my team stayed all year.
I saw WG making the trade moves and I thought, "I need to make a trade"! But when I looked everything over, I literally couldn't come up with any scenario where a trade made sense, so I stayed pat.
