Absolutely and completely ridiculous that I timed out at 2 am. It is absurd to think that a clock should run at 2 am. Why does the clock pause at all? So people can sleep? Well I sleep at 2am. Dumbest thing I have ever been a part of.

Taking the lead without being asked on slapping some rationales together. They're fun and help me justify all of my bad picks when I have to write something up about them:

Choosing Pick #8
I wanted to get somewhere in the middle. I am on enough to where I don't 'have' to be there for convenience, and its nice not be totally at the whims of a huge positional run by being on one end of the other.

Rounds 1 through 5:

1.08 (8) Kyle Tucker, OF, HOU
When I chose 8th I assumed I would be choosing between Yordan Alvarez and Juan Soto. Honestly Soto was in my head moreso than Alvarez, just betting on a return to an elite AVG, 30 HR and something like 100/100 without the 50 year old knees.

But when Tucker was staring at me, it was fairly easy to grab this stud, give up some runs scored and get those 25-ish juicy steals. I am awful at targeting steals, so getting a base was huge.

Steal of the round: Shohei Ohtani at #3. I gave WG a hard time about not taking him. He didn't even consider / realize ESPN's dual eligibility. Zen's lucky day.

Reach of the round: Not really a reach, as Bobby Witt Jr.'s ADP is in this range. I just don't think he is worth it here. R/RBI will suffer in KC's modest (albeit up and coming) lineup, and he really HAS to get 25+ sb to make it work otherwise.

2.13 (33) Jose Altuve, 2b, HOU
The debate here was between position scarcity at 2b and 3b, so Altuve or Arenado. There are actually more late(r) round 2b sleepers I like (most starting to go here in round 10 like India, Estrada, Cronenworth, etc) better than late 3b guys, but in the end Altuve's projected 10-15 steals (let's hope!) swayed me.

I gave serious consideration to a SP here, and while one stood out to me, it seemed reasonable to think that one from this tier would make it around....and it did, big time.

Steal of the round: Nothing sticks out too much, but I liked WG grabbing Olson at 2.20 for big power with some upside for him to improve his AVG after the pressure of the new contract and new team.

Reach of the round: DeGrom for the risk and Schwarber for the "can he repeat?" questions would have been contenders, but the pick of Luis Arraez takes the cake. I love batting average too, but there is no mathematical formula that makes that pick make much sense.

3.08 (48) Carlos Rodon, SP, NYY
If I chose a SP last round, it would have been Rodon. The projection systems I use each said that Rodon was a top 5 or 6 SP, but ADP had him more like 10th to 12th. I was shocked that he made it around.

Risks? Sure. Injury....but he's had 2 pretty healthy years, benefiting from a change in mechanics that it's believed reduced stress on his arm. Flyball pitcher in Yankee Stadium. True, but Rodon dominated LHB, and Yankee Stadium's 399 foot LF power alley should help with that.

Elite K, strong ratios and a contending team. Sign me up.

Steal of the round: Rodon, but Woodruff (who was more what I thought I would get) and Mullins were each criminally good deals.

Reach of the round: Jake McCarthy. Out of nowhere last year, and you HAVE to get 30 SB to make this price work. Lots of OF competition in AZ if he has a 3-week slump. He could also equally go off, but with a ~110-120 ADP, 60 seems soooooo early. I also though Bregman was pretty early, but I get it. 3b SUUUUUUCKS!

4.13 (73) Willy Adames, SS, MIL
SNIPED! There's your queue getting picked off in the 5 or 6 picks leading up to your pick, and there is setting your queue, putting it on auto pick and walking away and coming back to realize your guy is gone. That guy was Dalton Varsho. I do not target catchers, even more so this year with 10-12 pretty damned good ones, but a full time OF qualifying at catcher who might get 20+ steals? Seemed too good to pass up....but alas corythomas got me here (as he has done so at least 1 other time to date).

Adames was far from a consolation prize. Since my 3rd round pick Wander, Xander, Anderson and Cruz had all gone. If I was going to miss on a 3b (as well as wait on 1b for a WHILE) I didn't want to pick from the dregs at SS. Adames tied for 18th in MLB last year with 31 HR. OK the average is a drag but after getting not-exactly-elite HR to date with Tucker and Altuve, getting a big HR bat made sense here at SS. Only other real option was Swanson, who is nice but coming off a career year and may fall victim to the '1st year of a big contract' curse.

Steal of the round: Luis Castillo at 69. I would have taken him if he fell. ADP is more like 50-55 and the projections back it up. Great pick. I also liked Javier (in particular) and Gallen as the last of a SP tier.

Reach of the round: Andrew Vaughn. He can absolutely take a big step up, but at 63 when there were OF, SP at Varsho available it felt like a reach.

5.08 (88) Salvador Perez, C, KC
I don't target catchers, but thought I was drafting one last round and did so in this round. I regret it for roster construction purposes, but also don't really see someone I am butt-hurt for missing out on. I most likely would have given Glasnow a shot and hoped for 135 innings....or I could have gone closer (but that turned out amazingly 25 picks later). But in the end I chose an elite hitter at a shallow position that will get me close to 30 HR with an AVG that won't sink me. Runs are scarce due to him using a cane to 'run' the bases, but elite RBI and plenty of volume due to him DH'ing so frequently. I could have done worse.

Steal of the round: I could say Darvish as the last of a strong SP tier, but I will give Custer some love here and say Raisel Ingelsias at 98th overall. I see him top 3 or 4 this year behind an awesome Braves team. The closer tier falls off fast and I thought he scooped an excellent one.

I made your reach and steal in back to back rounds!! Lol Vaughan wasn't who i wanted that person was taken and i was running out of time (i believe) so i grabbed a recognizable name that I've had in past years with boom or bust mentality. I've never been a conventional drafter and it's a process that has never helped me either...lol

Glad you didn't take offense Custer. Opinions are like a-holes....we all have one and it is definitely intended very lightly.

6.13 (113) Ryan Helsley, RP, StL
Someone please tell me why he went as the 10th closer, behind the likes of Bard and Doval? I scoured sites for injury or questioning the role and found nothing.

Okay, so he came out of nowhere last year, and in recent years StL has not really settled on a closer. But the Statcast numbers supported his breakout, with both stuff and command. Still, it would probably be smart to handcuff him with Gallegos, which I successfully did later in the draft.

Steal of the Round: Most picks here are relatively within ADP, but I will go with Nathanial Lowe at 8.20 (120), which is around 20-25 picks past ADP.

Reach of the Round: Bard and Doval are candidates, but I will go with Bryce Harper. In a 20-team league, particularly with OF being pretty shallow as it is, will 50% of Harper + a replacement really be better than other players here? Maybe, but that assumes Harper comes back on time and is the same guy. Risky!

7.08 (128) George Kirby, SP, SEA
The last of a bit of a tier here. Kirby throws tons of strikes but in his rookie season gave up a TON of hits too. He has the benefit of T-Mobile to limit the damage on those hits. But if his new splitter becomes something and he shows any improvement in his secondaries and he can take a nice step up.

I would have chosen many of the other SP that went since my last pick: Severino, Greene, maybe Lodolo

Steal of the Round: I liked a lot of picks in this round: Greene, Vinnie P, Bautista (if healthy) and Santander.

Reach of the Round : Sean Manaea. I liked his early 93-94 velo in spring, but dayum this guy is going in the 300s. Even based upon his best years I am not sure he is worthy here.

8.13 (153) Nick Castellanos, OF, PHI
Castellanos had an awful year first year in Philly.....and per statcast numbers, he really earned it. Bad quality of contact. Swinging outside the zone too much. Castellanos has too long of a history for this to be some massive decline in skills. I am betting on the long track record and chalking it up to pressing in front of his new teammates. I think he is a massive steal here.

BTW I would have given very serious consideration to Clay Holmes here, but cory 'the Snipe Master' thomas grabbed him right before. I probably still would have taken Castellanos....maybe I should thank him for making the choice easier.

Steal of the Round: Castellanos and Stanton

Reach of the Round: Not a massive one this round, but maybe the two Japanese rookies a bit, mostly based upon ADP. Not skill or role.

9.08 (168) Hunter Renfroe, OF, LAA
Outfield is a pretty mixed bag this year, as it seems to have way too many platoons and just doesn't feel as deep as usual. You used to just forget it if you wanted and grab consistent contributors late. But in a 20-team league requiring at least 4 OF, I made it a point to stock up reasonably early. Teams that didn't get their 2nd or 3rd by now are probably regretting it, and you look at the OF past this pick I think there is a definite tier drop. Renfroe is what he is -- a .245-ish, 30 HR hitter. I like the new offense and hopefully he has plenty of runners on base to drive in.

Steal of the Round: I think Lance Lynn is a shoe-in for a return to his relative prominence. He sucked for a month or so in 2022 but was a beast down the stretch.

Reach of the Round: Michael Kopech. Tons of potential, but what of the health? Results have not caught up with the potential.

10.13 (193) Drew Rasmussen, SP, TB
cory 'the Snipe Master' thomas strikes again! I had Charlie Morton queued up. Whooops. I also wanted Jeffrey Springs this round, but he went earlier.

Rasmussen is a decent consolation prize, and depending upon the projection may even be better than Springs. Yeah, Tampa babies their pitchers and plays matchups. Let's hope he gets some 6 inning outings to go with those sweet ratios.

Steal of the Round: Most here went roughly where they should have in general. It could be Tovar, and I also liked India, Estrada and Munoz in this round.

Reach of the Round: Time to throw some shade WG's way in grabbing John Berti. Sure he will probably play 4 days a week, but many sites do not show him as a starting player. To be fair, 41 steals in 102 games is nothing to shake a stick at! Still, you give up power and counting stats with him to get those steals.

11.08 (208) Pete Fairbanks, RP, TB
I played chicken with taking a 1b for too long. I knew I wanted Wil Myers at some point but hoped he might go closer to ADP. I am no slave to ADP for sure, but its something to consider when debating between players.

I didn't like the rest of the 1b and figured my late round 3b (Rendon, Jung, Bohm, Turner and Rojas) would still be around for a while. BUZZ.....wrong!

So, ignoring 3b (to my eventual detriment) I took my second closer. Taking a Rays reliever hoping for 20 saves is like betting big on 4 while rolling craps. It might pay off, but the odds are long.

That said, the Rays' historical pattern is to avoid giving one reliever lots of saves to save on salary in arbitration. Well, after Pete Fairbanks had an epic second half, they signed him to a 3-year deal....so I pulled the trigger and hope for elite ratios, Ks and 15-20 saves.

Steal of the Round: Tyler Stephenson was a steal. Might play 140 games between catcher (roughly 65), 1b and DH. A great BA and some comparable power to the 5 catchers ahead of him. He just needs health. Jose Berrios could be a big steal here as well.

Reach of the Round: I might have said Ruiz, but he could also be the 'steal' of the draft. Mostly I thought guys in this round were relatively on point.

12.13 Miguel Vargas, 1b, LAD
Well, I damned well better get somebody at 1st base and need to jump ADP. Vargas has been anointed the Dodgers' primary 2b. Now with Gavin Lux out for the year, it seems even more assured that he will get all of the AB he can handle. Sucks that I won't be able to take advantage of his eventual 2b eligibility (with Altuve on the roster)....but hey, listen up! If you have a solid 1b and need a 2b, give me a slightly better 1b and you can take the premium position eligibility in 10 games! Inquire within!

Steal of the Round: Lars Nootbar and Paul Sewald. Sewald has premium ratios and perhaps a 60/40 split? Maybe? Nootbar is several website's darling breakout candidate, after a Driveline offseason added a whole bunch of bat speed and a strong second half last year. Nice picks.

Reach of the Round: Gotta be Joey Bart. As a Giants fan its a shame but he just has not lived up to his #2 overall draft spot. It's make or break for him this year, but the Giants are going to have a short leash.

Seattle C Cal Raleigh, with plenty of warts himself, went pick 310.

13.08 (248) Luis Urias, 2b/3b, MIL
In a 20-team league with 11 starting hitters, in round 13 you are going to have a few holes somewhere. The skill of drafting in leagues of this size is prioritizing the spots you are willing to have one of the last guys at a position. It's really uncomfortable as your queue of 200-300 ADP guys start disappearing like your hot girlfriend when you lose your job.

Luis Urias is a decent enough player, but Milwaukee's roster feels a bit of a mess with a myriad of 'buy low' guys on the roster taking up a variety of spots. Jesse Winker should be DH. Brian Anderson is 3b/OF. Lots of young OF could be called upon which could muddle IF playing time for Urias. My hope is between 2b and 3b he plays 4 out of 5 games.

Steal of the Round: I say Oswald Peraza has super high upside and is a steal here. He can legitimately go 20-25 this year for NYY. IKF is not a threat. Obviously Anthony Volpe is, but my hope is that someone moves to 3b after Donaldson flames out yet again and there is room for both Peraza and Volpe.

Many other candidates in this round too: Brown, Gary, Detmers, Mahle, Meadows, E. Cabrera and Eovaldi were all picks I loved.

Illegal pick of the Round: Jason Adam was supposed to be mine for a Fairbanks handcuff. Someone call Brooklyn 911.

14.13 (273) Alex Lange, RP, DET
While I started with a nice base of steals in Rounds 1 and 2, the board just didn't present well for me since, so as I sit here I am thinking I am bottom third in SB for sure, perhaps bottom quarter of the league. If you are going to suck in sb, my thought here was go 'buy' saves and secure a top 5 spot. Lange has control/walk issues so this is a risk, let alone the fact that the Tigers are awful so this could be a complete wiff. That said, the Tiger bullpen is also so lacking that Lange should 'have the job'. Give me 17+ saves and this pick works.

Steal of the Round: Garrett Mitchell for 10/20 upside and Miles Mikolas as just a deep league ratio stabilizer were two picks I liked.

Are there really any reaches after pick 275? ADP kind of stops mattering.

15.08 (288) Garrett Whitlock, SP, BOS
I was licking my chops heading into this round, as two SP sleepers of mine were still there in Urquidy and Maeda. Ooops. Picks 1 and 3 in this round. Dammit.

Whitlock has been yo-yo'd between the rotation and bullpen in recent years. Assuming the hip thing is OK, he should be in the Red Sox rotation and be OK for a sub 4.00 ERA (even if barely) with a reasonable whip and nearly 9 K/9. I hope.

Steal of the Round: Urquidy. Clear spot in the rotation. Houston knows wtf they are doing with pitchers, making stars out of Javier and Framber. They can make Urquidy a huge steal here.
