0 Subject: NASCAR MISSION STATEMENT

Posted by: DBART - [553361710] Wed, Apr 17, 2002, 10:39

Does anybody know nascar's mission statement. I am a student at Clemson and have been trying to find the information for a paper I am writing. Any information of website would be greatly appriciated.

NASCAR's Mission Statement:

To fix races or at least try to fix races to ensure the "sport" gains popularity no matter the price

please no replies on whether or not NASCAR is a sport or not.....it doesn't matter

it was a joke but and i'm not a judge who actually inspects the cars but they could conceivably give some cars advantages such as dodges, pontiacs, fords, chevrolets,

and then lower or raise different parts of the car where it may have an advantage on a certain track...

this is where the "try" part comes in

jones, they already do this and it's not a secret. Just ask NASCAR and even they will tell you that each car type has different specifications. However, this is not done in an attempt to "fix" a race, it's done in an attempt to make the cars as equal as possible so that the race is decided by team setup (within the specs), pit stops, and driver.

Many people would argue whether or not this is good for the sport, but either way it's certainly not a secret, so it makes it kind of hard to say that NASCAR is doing anything in an attempt to fix a race.

kkb...i understand this...it's not news to me....but could anyone say how equal it really makes the cars...even the drivers complain about cars getting different specifications and what-not....but in the end...the final say...are all the cars REALLY equal...one car or a company could conceivably get an advantage and the people who inspect the cars before and after the races would be the only ones who truly know if a car is breaking any restrictions...my point though....in a judging system there is no way to tell if someone or a type of car truly gets an advantage or not...thus one could have an advantage depending on the judges...just like in our United States judicial system...just like in figure skating...it then comes down to how ethical these judges are...and how ethical NASCAR is....what about going below the black line...sometimes people are penalized and sometimes not...there is no flat standard...without a standard a car, team, or type of car could get an edge...what about sterling marlin when he got out of his car during daytona or whatever that race was...by rules he is suppposed to be penalized but he was not...if that had been kevin harvick or tony stewart then they may have been penalized but then again maybe not...all in all the point is that there is not a standard in many of Nascar's rules and thus advantages can be conceivably given and who can say whether these advantages make the cars equal or give a "true" advantage...

Sterling was punished for his move. He was sent to restart at the end of the lead lap line. Funny thing is, if he would have waited to fix his car in the pits, he probably would have been at the end of the same line. But he was officially penazlied by NASCAR.

What kind of penalty do you think should have been handed down to Marlin by NASCAR?? Park the car and sent him to the woodshed?

jones, but by that rationale, every sport is fixed. What about an ump calling balls and strikes in baseball? Placement of the ball in football? Fouls in basketball? Every sport has some judgement to it, but it doesn't mean it's fixed.

As far as going below the YELLOW line (I don't recall there being a black line), NASCAR has been pretty consistent on the call. If you gain a position while you pass someone below the yellow line, then you're going to be penalized. Witness K.Wallace in last weekends race.

As far as the car advantages go, there are always going to be complaints from the drivers about their car type not being as good as others. Remember, the squeaky wheel gets the oil. If they don't say anything, then NASCAR isn't going to give them anything, so they almost complain just for sake of complaining, not because they really need anything. It's just like a guy in the lead with 10 laps to go who doesn't think he can hold onto the lead constantly telling NASCAR there's debris on the track. They're only saying it so that hopefully NASCAR might actually find something, not because the condition exists. Ever seen a WR in football fall on the ground and wave his arms about after barely getting tapped looking for the penalty flag? Same thing in basketball. Same as a batter asking the ump, "Was that really a strike?" They're all just trying to plant a seed in hopes that it will bloom into some advantage that they can get over the competition.

As to whether or not the car setups have made things equal, look at the number of winners by car type so far this season:
Ford: 3
Dodge: 3
Pontiac: 2
Chevy: 1

That's about as close as it can get without being absolutely equal. And the funny thing is that the Chevy's have done the least amount of complaining of all the car types, so it's obvious that they don't think their car is at a disadvantage in spite of only winning one race so far this year.

You're right that a lot of times there is no flat standard in NASCAR because there's not a lot of things that can have a flat standard. Do you penalize everyone who touches another car? If so, what about Bristol where there's no way to avoid it? What about bumping? What if you're forced below the yellow line and don't gain any position? What about if you're forced to pit outside your box because of the car in front or behind you? Just like incidental contact in basketball and football and just like determining an error or single on a bobbled ball in baseball, there is a lot of grey area in the rules of NASCAR because of the nature of the sport. But this doesn't mean that the fix is in. Is it possible? Of course, just like it is in every sport out there. Name a sport and I can tell you a way it can be fixed. But that doesn't mean that it is fixed.

challenger...sorry i got my facts wrong...you are right...

ok ok ok...everyone has opinions and thoughts...i was making a joke and i figured i would get some replies like that...

I just wanted you to realize that it could be fixed and you shouldn't believe everything that NASCAR tells you or any other league...

and yes it was really a joke even though i think that sometimes Nascar does different things to give some true advantages to drivers or penalize other drivers...but hey...that's what they have to do to attract more than the fanbase that they originally have....drama entertains...

jones, as I said in my last post, every sport has the opportunity to be fixed, so you're not stating anything new by saying, "I just wanted you to realize that it could be fixed and you shouldn't believe everything that NASCAR tells you or any other league". And if I follow this advice, then I also shouldn't believe everything the NFL, NBA, WNBA, MLB, PGA, LPGA, MLS, ATP, IRL, CART, PBA, NCAA, NTRA, NHRA, AQHA, WBA, WBC, IBF, IOC, and every other sports regulating body tells me. And where does that leave me? Pretty much paranoid. Personally, I would rather just accept that every sport has a level of tampering that could be involved and not try to find a sport that is absolutely pure, because one doesn't exist, and just enjoy the sport for what it is: entertainment.

Sure! There's humor around!

As Mork would say:

"Humor! ARRRRR!! ARRRR!! ARRRR!!"

Hmmmm! jimmy, since your "drinking on a fake id", this would indicate you're a youngin'. Do you know who Mork is?

jones, I certainly respect your right to make any comments you want about NASCAR or any other sport. I also think some good thoughts have come out of this thread. BUT, I don't see any reason at all, no matter what the argument is about, day or night, despite how angry anyone may be, that the words "figure skating" should ever be mentioned on this board...ever.

Unless, Katrinia Witt decides to pose on the hood of a NASCAR with nothing but her ______ on. :))))

Why not??? She's posed everywhere else! Mighty impressive if I do say so myself.
