Has anyone here been to a big race at the Texas Motor Speedway? We're planning on going next March, and my wife is worried that if we get a hotel too far away (say, 20 miles) we will miss the race.

Is the traffic really THAT bad? Are the interstates clogged because of race traffic? About how long of a wait can we expect?

Frankly, I don't think that distance really matters for events like this (spent 2 hours trying to get out of the Astrodome parking lot after a Pantera concert once).

I don't know about TEX, but I went to the Spring Busch race at RIR and it took about an hour to get parked from the Interstate (usually about a 5 min drive). I don't think being 20 miles away will be a problem any more than being say 5 miles away because I really can't see a 20 mile traffic jam, but it's going to be bad no matter what. 2-3 hours wouldn't surprise me.

I'll echo KKB. Bristol was about the same as KKB's RIR experience time-wise, and although I have been to Texas' speedway, that was back in '97 for the big Blockbuster Rockfest shortly after it opened. The parking lot hadn't been paved, it was the first day of summer and about 95F with no cloud cover, and they ran out of ice after 4 hours of an 18-hour concert. Not good times. Bad times.

BTW, Pantera rules!

Sorry no TMS experience but I've been to about 10 races and the traffic to get in/out is always slow. I generally stay about 100 miles out (cheaper hotel costs) and time my drive to arrive about 1/2 hour before the gates open. Usually get parked about an hour after that. We hang out, sleep, eat, drink, read the racing papers, go souvenir shopping...
Same after the race, eat, drink, and wait for traffic to clear out. Meet a lot of interesting people; I love the variety of the crowd. Makes for a long day but well worth it.
