0 Subject: ATTN: TSN - Can the NASCAR game get a little love?

1. "Next Roster Freeze" still says Sat 2/22 7PM ET. That was about 2 hours ago.

2. As mentioned above, roster freeze, and price update, was to occur 2 hours ago. My roster values are still unchanged and my Financial Report is blank.

3. Price Movers still reads "First price update of the season is Sat, 2/22."

4. All drivers still have "Previous Price: same".

In other words, the price udpate hasn't occured.

I was hoping when I saw the NASCAR game this year that it meant TSN had decided to give a little attention to the game instead of scraping it, but I'm now second-guessing my assumptions. If the game is going to be as big of a hassle as last year, please just let us all know now so we can focus on teams we have with other sites.

Sorry to swipe your thread....

I am new to this sport/game so a few questions:

1. Assuming this becomes a regular TSN thing, am I able to make changes at this point and have them count for tomorrow? Right now my roster is ok but I figure I will ask for future reference.

2. Provisional spots: those are spots that are actually in the race right? those aren't alternates correct?

1. Who knows. There have been all kinds of botched freezes like this with different repercussions. One time last season it was possible to make trades AFTER the race and get the points for the race that had just finished (!)

2. Provisional means yes, that driver is IN the race.

1. As Fatal Image said, who knows. Unless you have a team that is in dire need of a trade (like a racer not racing), I wouldn't make the trade after the supposed deadline.

2. The top 36 qualifiers make the race on time. The remaining 7 make the race on provisionals. Further, if there is a past WC Champion who did not make the race on qualifying, they can claim the 43rd spot over a non-WC Champion. For provisionals,OWNERS, not drivers, points are used to determine ordering of the bottom 7 drivers. For the first 4 races of the season, last years points are used. After that, they use the current years points. Every team starts the season with 4 provisionals. They earn an extra provisional every 8 races (8, 16, 24, and 32). So you should be worried about your drivers, right? Wrong. As long as a team is in the top 25, it won't be charged a provisional. So the only drivers you need to worry about are the bottom-feeders of the sport, like a Brett Bodine last season who ran out of provisionals. Everyone else is pretty safe.

Back to the topic, I know TSN isn't checking this board tonight, but it's now 4 hours since the "roster freeze" and still nothing. I guess everyone went home for the weekend and forgot they have a game that specifically needs to run on the weekend.

I guess it was just wishful thinking to think that the Price Movers would exist this morning. Sigh.

Some more love needed...

  • Biffle, Greg drives the #16 Ford, not #44.
  • Bodine, Todd drives the #154 Ford, not #26.
  • Cope, Derrike drives the #37 Chevy
  • Earnhardt, Kerry drives the #83 Chevy
  • McMurray, Jamie drives the #42 Dodge, not #40 (Marlin is driving his own ride this year)
  • Mears, Casey drives the #41 Dodge, not #3 (Nevermind the Chevy fans, you might want to change this before the Dale, Sr. fans catch wind of it)
  • Nadeau, Jerry drives the #01 Pontiac, not #44 (so, that makes 2 drivers not in the #44 car)
  • Rudd, Ricky drives the #21 Ford, not #28 (this was known before last year even finished)
  • Sadler, Elliott drives the #38 Ford, not #21 (see above comment)
  • Schrader, Ken drives the #49 Dodge, not #36
  • Spencer, Jimmy drives the #7 Dodge, not #41 (see McMurray comment)
  • Sprague, Jack drives the #0 Pontiac, not #60
  • Wallace, Mike drives the #09 Dodge, not #14 (and no, this is not the same as Bill Elliott)

Also, in the game rules, it states "Fantasy Stock Car - Season 1 includes all events between the Daytona 500 (2/16) and the Tropicana 400 (7/13), for a total of 20 races". According to both my schedule and your schedule, that's a total of 18 races.

Do ya'll remember what happened last season when TSN failed to freeze the drivers at the 1st scheduled roster freeze? Several teams tried to take advantage of that problem and bought the top finishing drivers they could afford after the race was finished.

Wonder if it will happen again?

At least TSN is consistent in their continueing process of starting their nonessential games like NASCAR and golf. Seems at the start of every season for these games lately, they come out with a comedy of errors/failures. In golf this season they established their 1st price changes based solely on the unlimited trade period, instead of their normal established procedure of trades used after the 1st roster freeze.

Time for

Success?

Not yet!

... and now my Roster Value is showing up as "0 TSND" and none of my drivers have a price next to them.

So are they fixing it, or is this just what happens when things get screwed up like this? "Announcements" says nothing, so maybe it's the latter.

i am gonna go out on a limb here and guess they took away the option to sell and buy drivers because they are trying to fix it. you probably could have made changes after the race and gotten credit for their scores so they figured they would take away that option and then try to calculate scores.

ok where are we now..

Prices have changed although the Price Movers page itself is not yet updated. I seem to have gained $110,000 overall.

Rockingham points are updated but my total is wrong. TSN has me for 572 but my real total is 680. Guess what they did? I got the Rockingham points for my frozen roster from LAST week.

Interesting. Now every drivers car number is twice what it was before, including the wrong ones from above.

Stuff like this is exactly why I have quit playing the TSN games. I got burnt two consecutive years in the Nascar game, and once each in the Football and Basketball games. Don't expect TSN to rectify these problems. If they were interested in running the game properly, they wouldn't keep having these same problems time and time again. I like the format of the TSN games, but it's not worth the hassle to try to deal with all the problems. This year I signed up for the Yahoo Nascar game and so far it seems to be run much better than the TSN games. The scoring is accurate and timely, and so far at least, access problems are non-existant. For the sake of those of you who are playing the TSN games, I hope I am proven wrong and they get their act together, but I am finished with TSN.

well, Erik is lurking in the Baseball forum. Let's see if he tackles the items above.

Yeah, Yahoo is better run, but the format is a dud compared to TSN in my opinion. Picking players out of tiers is kind of boring.

I have found that Kafenatid's "6-pack" game is better than TSN's, as for Yahoo played it for two years and went nuts trying to keep track of the drivers used and various tiers.

Thanks KKB

Guys:

I'll try to get to these suggestions above. We have two big problems with NASCAR -- 1) our stat feed isn't as good as our feed for other games; 2) the game doesn't get the attention it deserves. I'll say that straight-out. We have tried to improve the quality of this game, but it hasn't reached the level of our baseball or football games. Part of that, honestly, relates to our business objectives. But also, we just don't have a good NASCAR fan in-house, and so we make obvious mistakes over dinky stuff that we could and should catch.

Here's what I propose: on a weekly basis, one of you gathers information for me that are things we should focus on. If I get that email on a weekly basis, I'll try to make a point of, slowly, improving game quality.

Is anyone game to try this? Ebarmack@sportingnews.com.

Erik, one thing you could do is sync all your driver information with sites like NASCAR.com, Kafenatid.net, and Jayski's (don't laugh, the site is VERY popular in the NASCAR community). The information is readily available and should take someone (like an intern or something) less than 1/2 a day to wade through and make sure everything is up-to-date and correct.

The second thing you could do is just force someone to pay attention to the game. Simple stuff like Price Movers and "Next Roster Freeze" and all the other things shouldn't take a "Nascar fan" to fix. It just takes someone saying, "Every Saturday at 7pm, you're responsible for making sure the NASCAR Price Movers worked correctly. If they're not working, it's your butt." If you don't have a NASCAR fan, then it just becomes someone's job. I'm not a huge basketball fan, but I make sure that everything basketball related on my site is working whether I like it or not. There's no point in me offering anything related to basketball if it doesn't work and I'm not willing to take the couple of minutes it takes to make sure it's working. I see things like the Gurupie division having someone with a ranking of 7 having a listed ranking of "15" and I just wonder if someone is flipping a switch and not taking a look at the results/consequences.

The third thing you should do is tell your stats source to shape up or ship out. NASCAR is one of the easiest sports to maintain stats for. It's certainly far easier, and far fewer stats, than something like Baseball, Football, Basketball, or Hockey. If your stats source can't handle it, then I would find someone who could.

Lastly, what's the position of "Resident NASCAR fanatic" paying these days? ;)

Ok, fair points. We are swamped, but we'll try to get these things straightened out this week.

As far as "resident TSN games expert," I can't promise pay, exactly, but I'll toss game credits out for a dedicated person (one) who wants to help with QA.

1) Next Roster Freeze should be fixed.

2) Car #s (above) should be fixed.

Please let me know if there's anything else we need to do to get on track.
