Subject: JERRY NADEAU SERIOUSLY INJURED!

I know he's not one of the "studs" of NASCAR, but Jerry Nadeau is out of the Richmond race after a very hard crash in the first practice today and is apparently fighting for his life, much less trying to race for tomorrow. "Doctors at the track told NASCAR spokesman Jim Hunter that the accident has yielded the 'potential for serious injuries,' but Hunter was unable to provide further details." He had to be cut from the car and some local news reports said he was not breathing on his own. One mentioned that he was on life support and while that would not be surprising given the official comments, it has not been confirmed anywhere that I can see. Obviously this is more than just a fantasy sports issue and my thoughts and prayers go out to the NASCAR and Nadeau family. |

FYI, the crash happened when Nadeau was heading into turns 1-2 in the first practice. It looks like he lost the back end of his car and spun around 180-degrees and the driver's side of the car collided flat against the wall, right about in the center of 1-2, at about 140-150 mph (according to FX).

Guys on FX just said that he's in critical condition and that he did require breathing assistance as he was leaving the track. Not very much new information, as "critical condition" could mean anything.

From what i've heard when they took him out of the car it didn't look like he was moving, not breathing. Also there is a Nascar Official at the hospital but they can't release any new info, because his wife hasn't arived yet. But when you have to be cut out of the car from the top it isn't going to be good. Hopefully he'll be alright.

Any time they don't release info due to family, it's never a good sign.

Yeah I was thinking that too. But then again you can't really release much info without family's concent, so hopeing that isn't a bad sign.

"He is in VCU Medical Center, and his condition is listed as critical," NASCAR vice president Jim Hunter said.
Hunter said the hospital was prevented from saying more while awaiting the arrival of Nadeau's wife, Jada, who was traveling from South Carolina after attending her grandfather's funeral. NASCAR sent a plane to pick her up and she arrived around 11 p.m. EDT after enduring weather delays.

ESPN SportsCenter just reported that his condition is "critical, but stable" and that his vital signs are "looking good." This is definitely good news.

They said before the race today that his vital signs are improving. They didn't go into details about the extent of the injuries, but did say that although he hasn't spoken yet, his eyes were open (not sure how alert he was) and he was sedated.

Drivers visit recovering Nadeau
Seems he has some level of consciousness, but is in an induced coma. They say that his vital signs are good, but it still doesn't look too good.

From Sludge's link: " But a source close to Nadeau said the driver was in an induced coma and has a skull fracture, and the prognosis as of Saturday afternoon was not good, the Hartford Courant reported. The source also told the paper that a chaplain had been at the hospital most of Saturday." Certainly doesn't sound very good. I'm hoping for the best for him.

Jerry Nadeau - along with Sam Hornish and Sarah Fisher - was one of my main rivals when I was racing sprint karts a few years back.
I hope he is doing ok, never good to see anyone -whether you know them or not - fighting for their life. Good to see that they at least upgraded his status.

Last I heard, he was awake and his eyes open. But he has yet to talk. They said he was responding through hand grabs and eye movement.

I was believing he was doing better, but from this article he has a long road to haul.
Portions from Nadeau progressing, but rehab may be lengthy
NASCAR Winston Cup driver Jerry Nadeau remained in a semi-conscious state Tuesday in a hospital in Richmond, Va.
Based on the progress he has made since he was injured May 2, he faces a long recovery with an indeterminate timeframe.
MB2 Motorsports general manager Jay Frye said doctors remain encouraged by the pace of Nadeau's recovery from his primary fault, a head injury doctors have told him is "moderate to severe."
Frye, who previously had to deal with a similar situation when MB2 driver Ernie Irvan suffered a career-ending head injury in the late 1990s, said Nadeau is responsive.
"His communication has consisted of hand squeezing and facial gestures," Frye said. "He is in a transitional state of regaining consciousness (and) being as determined and motivated as he is -- he has a hard time sitting still -- I think that will help him recover."
In addition to the head, lung and rib injuries that Nadeau sustained when his No. 01 U.S. Army Pontiac slammed into the Turn 1 wall during a practice session at Richmond International Raceway, doctors have also diagnosed a fractured left scapula, or shoulder blade.

Great News!
Nadeau now fully conscious, speaking
"The difference since the last time I saw Jerry was incredible," Frye said. "He is more responsive, more alert and following commands with more consistency. It was an emotional and wonderful feeling when he made the first move to shake my hand.
"He was hugging and kissing his daughter (Natalie Kate, three-months-old) and had pizza for dinner. It is really remarkable to see how far he has progressed in a short time."
(Jay Frye is the general manager of MB2 Motorsports, Nadeau's team)
