Subject: NASCAR Nextel Cup Series?

Looks like NASCAR has a deal with Nextel to replace RJ Reynolds as their next series sponsor. Somehow, the "Nextel Cup Series" and "The Nextel" just don't sound the same. |

Also, how will this effect guys like Ryan Newman (ALLTEL) and Robby Gordon (Cingular Wireless)? Currently, the Busch Series has Steadman Marlin with Keystone Light, but I know there are a lot of drivers not competing in the McDonalds Drive-Thru Pit Championship because McDonalds serves Coca-Cola products. It would seem kind of awkward to have Ryan Newman win the "Nextel Cup Championship" and thank his sponsor ALLTELL at the championship dinner, wouldn't it?

Since Winston has been the sponsor the last 30 years I think the names were just given to them. I'm guessing in July when they make the release of the Nextel deal they will change the name to a Nascar thing. Not the sponsor. But you never know, probably just depends how much money Nextel is wanting to pay. But I think just a generic name for the sport.

Err, that's what this deal IS. They are sponsoring the series. You get your name all over everything. What exactly do you think Winston was paying for all these years, if not that? :)

I agree with Punk42 AE, but I have a sneaking suspicion that NASCAR will try to do something "special" by creating the "Earnhardt Cup" or something. I can see it being something like what they've got in hockey where it will be the "NASCAR Championship Series sponsored by Nextel" with the "Earnhardt Cup Championship sponsored by Nextel."

No offense to Earnhardt, but the "Petty Cup" would be better, IMHO.

I think Petty too, he is the grand daddy of racing. But since Dale passed on, they would probably give it to him. They should just have a giant voting campaign for it.
