NASCAR bans racing back to caution flag

All very vague. I will be interested to see how they're going to determine what happens to lapped cars. If they're not going to allow any passing at all (i.e. lapped cars can't go past the leader), then you'll see a lot more lapped cars racing the hell out of the leader under green. Are they going to say that any lapped cars who are within X seconds of the leader get a lap back? Will be very interesting to see what the details are.

Its a good thing to do. They will probably just keep lapped cars back where they are instead of letting them pass or move up if a certain amount of time back. If the driver is a lap back, it isn't Nascar or anyone else's fault. So thats why i'm guessing that.

You wonder if NASCAR will use the last time across the start/finish line to set the restart order. It will also make restarts alot more interesting and perhaps cause more yellows as lapped cars figure it the best (only)oportunity to regain a lap.

On paper it sounds like a good idea, the problem is that NASCAR has left it vague enough to cause arguments later i.e., no racing below the yellow.

I don't think it will be like that. They will most certainly have to score it as soon as the yellow comes out. If you score it based on the last lap, then any passes that happen on the lap that the yellow comes out just didn't happen. Of course, if you score it as soon as the yellow comes out, as good as GPS is, it's not perfect. (FWIW, I've come around to KKB's thinking *gasp* on this one. GPS isn't perfect, but these type of controversies will be far and few between if they use it.)

A few things...

1. IT'S ABOUT TIME!!! Geez, it only took the endangerment of one of the sports' top names to get NASCAR to finally realize how stupid racing back to the yellow is. Thankfully, there were no major incidents before this was implemented.

2. The highest scored lap down car gets to return to the lead lap. From today's recap: "The first implementation of NASCAR's new rule prohibiting passing under caution came on the third lap, when Mike Harmon slid into the wall exiting the first turn. Also under the rule, the highest-scored car a lap down -- Tammy Jo Kirk -- was restored to the lead lap following the crash on lap 17." It's not perfect, but I like the idea. It prevents that lapped car from doing something too stupid on a restart and it increases the competition by adding one more car to the lead lap.

3. GPS is the way to go. The technology is only going to get better, so jump on board and help push the technology to get better. Maybe the car manufacturers will jump on board and help push things along as well. While there will be occassions where the GPS fails to be 100% accurate, it will still be better than all the complaining from putting everybody back to the last lap's positions. Passing is hard enough in NASCAR, so let the drivers keep their positions.

4. NASCAR, again thankfully, has always appeared open to change. They've already acknowledged that this is just the start of the idea. They know there will be pros and cons and they will work out things as they figure out what works and what doesn't. I'm just happy that they've at least acknowledged the problems of racing back to the yellow and have begun a program to keep the drivers safe when they need to be.

5. What was with Tony Raines (I THINK it was him) racing back to the yellow today? Did he forget about the rule already? ;)

Another note about the new lap-down rule. I'm watching the race and just now they mentioned, "And here's the battle for the 22nd position and this IS an important battle." Why? Because Newman was battling Spencer to become the first car a lap down so that in the event of a caution, Newman gets the free pass.

I like that. I like the fact that the lapped cars aren't just riding around, biding their time until the yellow comes out and praying that the race leader lets them get a lap back. Adds some more excitement to the race, IMHO.

The one thing about the "lucky dog" lap back rule is just what Newman did today. Realizing that he's the last in line no matter what stops 2-3 times under a long yellow and gets his tank filled.

Now I realize that everybody else is could have come in at the same time, but it seems that this lap back rule MIGHT have a lophole that needs to be adjusted. I say that because not only did Newman get a gift of his lap back, but then gets to re-pit under the same yellow. Might be they want to say that if you get your lap back, you get one pit stop.

Of course maybe I'm just getting tired of seeing Newman in the winner's circle;)
