0 Subject: wol558.vxd making me to die young

Dudes, helppp!

My perennial reservoir of problems that is my sister's computer is acting up (again). Since re-installing Win 98 (no newer versions at hand, unfortunately) it's been crying about a missing wol558.vxd -file upon start-up, yet has agreed to boot to Windows. Alas, since a couple of days not so anymore; the bloody bugger would just halt up this message and not take a press of any key as a sufficient remedy. Googling my way through the cyberspace, I found some Q&A suggesting re-installing this missing file. So I found it, copied on a disk and off I went. At sister's place, booted at safe-mode and got to Windows. I then copied this file to c:\windows\system, and restarted computer... To no avail, no fruitition.

So what would be the correct course of actions here? Is there some other folder where I should try copying this bugger of a file to? Or try something different altogether?

Your turn, gents.

Read through this thread and try some of these suggestions. Seems like Post #4 has some luck.

WOL558.VXD

Personally, I don't recommend deleting entries from the Registry. Usually unistalling the drivers and removing and readding the card helps out a lot.

Thanks a ton for the quick reply. I forgot to mention that following my instructions (which I found from the net), my sister did indeed delete the registry entry already.

Is this file always related to a driver of a network card? To my knowledge there's no such device installed on their computer.

Here's a place to get the driver.

From my "copernic"ing all indications and searches conclude that it does appear to be a network/network card related issue, specifically the Intel adapters. If the PC doesn't connect to the internet by high speed or if it is not connected to a network then you can try disabling any network features, this should clear the error.

Deleting a registry value may have caused additional problems.

I'll check on my home PC this evening. It's running Win98 so I'll be able to look at a few settings and throw out some suggestions.

Again, I must stress how eternally grateful I am for your prompt advise. The computer in question connects to internet via an ADSL-modem plugged into an USB-port, thus no need for a network-card. But now that I think of it, there might be such a device plugged in as the computer served originally at my father's workplace and was probably connected using this network-card there. I have to check this.

Two other things to try;

1) Go to System settings and disable the network card in the Device Manager Tab.

If that doesn't work try:

2) Opening the case and unseat the network card.

3) Remove all ethernet devices in Network properties.

4) Reboot.

5) Attempt to connect to Internet using ADSL.

6) If it connects successfully then tidy up the PC. If not.

7) Reseat the card.

8) Reboot.

9) Windows will do it's new hardware detection and attempt to install a driver. If prompted:

10) Reinstall the driver.

this wol558.vxd thing is driving me crazy. got the message that asked if I had intentionally deleted the file, DUH~!~~!@!! Sure that's what I did! Actually it came up missing after defrag.
I downloaded the file to a floppy from your link on the above thread. Copied it to windows and system 32 files. Still can't get an internet connection. I'm running a StarSmart ADSL modem which is running fine on my primary computer.
Any clue as to how to fix this thing??
