Anyone care to give me a quick down and dirty lesson in newsgroups?

My company is in the buisnees of managing A/R for hospitals, so I am always interested in staying up on healthcare business articles, trends, mergers, medicare, healthcare reform, etc..

What type of informations do newsgroups provide?

I assume I can joing mailing lists for a service that send articles on the topics I sign up for?

Anyone have any recommendations?

I haven't explored this topic, and thought i might get a quick tutorial here as opposed to learning via trial and error. Any help appreciated.

rfs - Another option is to sign up for News Alerts from Google (assuming you have a gmail account).

Goto the Google News page ... over on the left side is a link that says "news alerts". At the next page, type in search terms that you find applicable, and your in-box will start filling up with news.

RFS,
My ISP has their own usenet servers. Yours might. There are free severs out there. Earthlink has over 10000 newsgroups to cover practically all interests and topics.
You need a news reader client, but outlook express does just fine.

I found this article that might help define Usenet. Taken from:

http://www.faqs.org/faqs/usenet/what-is/part1/ :

WHAT USENET IS
--------------

Usenet is the set of people who exchange articles tagged with one or more universally-recognized labels, called "newsgroups" (or "groups" for short).
There is often confusion about the precise set of newsgroups that constitute Usenet; one commonly accepted definition is that it consists of newsgroups listed in the periodic "List of Active Newsgroups" postings which appear regularly in news.lists.misc and other newsgroups. A broader definition of Usenet would include the newsgroups listed in the article "Alternative Newsgroup Hierarchies" (frequently posted to news.lists.misc). An even broader definition includes even newsgroups that are restricted to specific geographic regions or organizations. Each Usenet site makes its own decisions about the set of groups available to its users; this set differs from site to site.

There are other Free Readers out there.
Free agent - Xnews are two that I use along with outlook express.
It is a case of sorting through what is available and subscribing to those that you want to read.

Caveat Emporor really fits news groups and it does the forum...take things with a grain of salt and do your research.

Also, let me see if I can get an answer to your question from my brother. He is the Head Industrial Engineer for Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
