0 Subject: Laptop cooling fan isue

My son has an HP ze5385 laptop, about 18 months old. Out of warranty.

Yesterday, one of the cooling fans started to rattle. It stops rattling when the computer is turned upside down, but rattles pretty steadily when rightside up. The fan still spins. There are two other fans that seems to be OK. The fan that rattles is presumably the primary fan, and the others kick in when additional cooling is needed.

I'm guessing that perhaps the bearings in the fan motor are starting to fail, but that is just a guess.

I can see the part number on the fan: CF0550-B10M. It is also labeled 5v, 0.35A, manufactured by Sam Lam Tech Co, Ltd.

Questions:

1. If we got a replacement cooling fan unit, it is likely that we could successfully replace it ourselves? Or is this better left to a trained professional?

2. Is this something that we should be looking to remedy ASAP, or could we wait until the fan completely fails? Could the processor be permanently damaged if the fan fails, or would the laptop simply shut itself off?

Any advice?

Have you tried computing standing on your head?

Glad I could be of help. ;)

Removing the case to access your fan will void your warranty. If this is something you are prepared to do it is easy. Numerous FAQs are out there about doing just this.

The warranty is already expired. That's not an issue.

Cool--- And Quiet! Part One

Cool and Quiet, Part II

Cool and Quiet, Part III

Boatloads of info in those articles. Each is a few pages. You can replace it yourself. And, you can wait a bit as long as you aren't seeing system performance taking a hit and/or you have no other signs of problems, especially heat related problems. But remember to back things up regularly, even more often than normal, in case of a sudden problem.

How'd the home repair job end up working for you?

The fan stopped rattling, so I left it alone.
