I was going to ask an IT guy here at work about this but I figure you guys know more than they do.

I want to transfer files from my (very) "old" computer to my new one. I have a USB memory stick to perform this task. My old computer has two USB ports in the back. It is running Windows 2000.

I don't know where/how to recognize the memory stick on the old computer. On the new one (a Dell 4700) anything I plug in to a USB is immediately recognized; to the extent that it goes, "Hey! You stuck something in me! Want tell me what it is?"

The memory stick "directions," such as they are, "say" stick it in the USB port, it will be recognized as E: That doesn't work on the old computer.

Is there some secret DOS command I need to use for my old system to find this new place to "Save" files to? I tried re-booting with it in and nothing new happened.

I had a similar issue involving my Lexar Jumpdrive with a computer at work. A View->Refresh in My Computer did the trick.

Your problem seems to be a little past that.

I would look at the drive letter that your keychain uses while hooked up to your home PC and see if that conflicts with a drive letter at work.

Post the name and model of your jumpdrive, maybe somebody around here can go into a little more depth.

W2k should recognize the drive.( W2k is based on NT not DOS) Is plug and play enabled in CMOS?
But before you try going in CMOS, make sure the USB port is working properly then right click on my computer icon on your desk top/Hardware/Hardware wizard
Now run the wizard and see if it recognizes it.

The drive letter shouldn't make a difference by the way. Each computer will assign it a letter depending on how many drives are installed on that computer.

Also try looking in device manager, expand usb selections and see if it's there with a yellow question mark.

I haven't used USB drives before, does it need to be formatted 1st?
