0 Subject: Printer and File Sharing - Home network

I now have a desktop and a laptop both using the XP Pro operating system. Both computers connect to the internet through a Linksys router, which in turn connects to the cable modem. That works fine.

Supposedly, I can also use this router to enable file and printer sharing between the two computers. But so far, I've been unable to do this. (I had tried it once before when my desktop was a W98 SE machine, and also had problems. I never pursued them.)

So far, I ran the network setup wizard on both computers and rebooted each of them.

On my desktop, if I look in "My Network Places", I can see the name of my desktop (itself) and my laptop is also listed. So somehow it has detected the laptop computer. However, I cannot access it. If I click on the laptop name, I get a message that it is not accessible. The full message is
\\[laptop name] is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found.

On my laptop, I cannot see any evidence of the network. The laptop computer is listed by its name, and its own shared folders are listed, but there is no evidence of the network connection, or of the desktop machine.

I've tried running the troubleshooting wizards, but they haven't been particularly helpful.

I don't know if the problem relates to the network setup on the desktop, or the laptop, or the router, or of some combination. Any ideas?

They have to be in the same workgroup-----that is key-----do you have the same workgroup name for both?

I usually do this on the good old commandline with the "net use"-command.

you can get the syntax with "net use /?"
here is an example to mount the laptop on your desktop:
net use * \\192.168.0.3\laptopshare /USER:mylaptop\laptopuser

if this does not work you will at least get an error code. maybe this code can help you to find an answer in the internet

2 things to check. Do you have a firewall that might be blocking it ??

Second. For a small home network I like to use Netbui as the protocol. Just seems to work easier. To get Netbui in an XP machine you need to get your windows XP CD. install netbuei on XP

You also You also might want to go into control panel and then change it to clasic view and then going into administrative tools-->Computer mangement and then to users and add the username and password of the 2nd computer (1st PC being the one 1 that has the printer connected to it.)

Installing the NetBEUI protocol seemed to do the trick. Printer sharing works great. File sharing seems very labored (takes a long time to find files), but it was printer sharing that I was most interested in.

Guru: Do you plan on printing from the computer that does not have the printer directly plugged in while the other computer is off?

You may want to invest in a print server if that's true. Mine cost $40 at Best Buy so it was no big deal. I'm sure you could find one even cheaper.

If you go that route, let us know, because I spent the better part of a Saturday morning (before football started) installing one.

The printer is connected to the desktop machine, which is always on. So a print server is not necessary at this point.

I am going through the same thing - router, 3 XP machines, cable modem, printer sharing.

I have had two older HP printers connected directly to my router via a parallel port with no problem, but with the latest HP lasers, you have to buy a special "N" version that cost a couple hundy more, so I'm forced to use my desktop as the server - annoying because I often work on the Linux side, disabling printer ability for my two other machines.

I have enabled printing and file-sharing a couple of times, but I keep losing it, and it isn't always obvious why.

I'll give netbuei a try.

Here I am again. Now that I had to reload Windows XP on a new hard drive on my desktop, I'm trying to recover the ability for my laptop to acccess the desktop printer, as before.

On the desktop: I installed the NETBEUI protocol. I set up a file/print sharing workgroup named "XYZ" (for sake of discussion). This was the same name as the old workgroup.

On the laptop: the protocols have not changed, but I reran the network setup utility anyway.

On the desktop, when I go to "My Network Places", I can see both the desktop computer name and the laptop computer name (Toshiba) listed when I click on XYZ. So somehow the system has found the laptop. However, when I click on the laptop icon, I get the following pop-up message:
\\Toshiba is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The networkpath was not found.

On the laptop, when I click on XYZ, I do not see the name of the desktop. Only the laptop.

Any ideas what to do next (short of simply buying a printer hub)?

I resolved the problem by adding "NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatable Transport Protocol " to my network properties list on each computer of my network.

Didn't need that before, but apparently the NetBEUI protocol wasn't working properly after the system reload.

Whatever...
