Any 1 have this service?
I have cable now. But they are increasing there fee.
My cable bill says 384kdown / 128k up
Ran a isp speed test
Bandwidth calculation is measured against that of CNET's Internet Services.

1450.4 Kbps -

Yahoo ad says.
Up to 1.5 Mbps
is that faster then 1450.4 Kbps?

Paying $35 Now They are $26.95.

Any input would be nice.

Thanks

DSL in general is slower than cable. And with DSL it matters how close you live to the phone company. It's slower the farther you live away. And of course your phone line is tied up while your on the internet.

GolfFreak,
1.5 Mbps should be 1500 Mbps. If you're getting 1450 out of your 384Mpbs you've been getting pretty lucky lately. Keep in mind that your provider is only "required" to give you speeds within their stated range. I have YahooDSL and IIRC their 1.5 service is usually advertised as service within the 750Kbps to 1.5Mbps range (both download). If you switch, you could end up with with something closer to the low end of that range. On the other hand, unless you live really close to the service node, I'd be surprised if your DSL gave you anything really close to the upper end of the 1.5Mbps range.

Case in point, I currently have the 1.5 to 3Mbps service, and I get speeds around 2.2. That's a lot faster than what I was getting with my 1.5 service, but a lot slower than the advertised top speed...

Tough call IMHO. Switching might save you a few bucks but at the cost of a little speed...?

Get more info from the Yahoo provider and others if possible.

Just a side note. Your phone line is not tied up while on the internet with DSL. You can be online and on phone at the same time.

Golf: "Didnt relize I was leasing a modem. So Ill buy one and save $5 more."

I have cable internet via Comcast and I lease the modem. I've had Comcast cable internet for nearly four to five years now and I've been thru 3 or 4 modems.

Maybe its the quality Comcast provides (Motorola should work just fine though.) or just bad luck, but they don't support modem problems if its not their modem. They stop at the line service going in.

Check with your cable company on the variance in support should you buy your own modem from someplace else. They can and will use that to screw you out of tech support, just like how Comcast tries to pull BS with me about my router.

I bought a new one just to spite them and they still accused the router until they realized I had a weak signal going into the house.

GF, Cosmo might have a point about buying a modem compared to leasing it. I've been with Charter since 2000 and I've had to replace my modem 2 years ago. You might want to check into their support if you decide on buying your own modem. I've seen circuit city offering deals on 2wire modems (the best out there that I know of) through Charter.

At the beginning of last year Charter changed their service from a guaranteed 768 kbps into either a 384kbps for $29.99 or a 3M (3000 kbps with 256kbps up) for $39.99. The modem lease for the 3M service is only $2.96.

Also check your speed at www.dslreports.com a more accurate test. (tests and tools link on the left)
