0 Subject: KILLED!

Posted by: PuNk42AE
- [150243017] Thu, Feb 03, 2005, 10:13

I'm getting killed by Malware/Spyware ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. All of my programs keep getting Fatal Errors when I try to use them. If I try to use Adaware it locks up and then gets an error and closes. How can I restart XP in safemode? I have been looking all over since last night to try and find a way but then gave up.

Hit F8 on bootup, before you get to the Windows XP screen.

Well that wasn't anything but AIM Code so it isn't any kind of hack or anything. And J used it on other people too! SO did Rendle and SmallWhirled so it wasn't just me. :'P

Well I got alot of crap off the computer but there is still a ton left that won't come off. Startup Monitor keeps telling me that things like...
kalvsys, among 5 other things have registered as executable and then I go looking for that file and can't find it.

I think i'm screwed.

Time for a format. Once that stuff gets in the registry and that, its far easier to just wipe Windows and re-install it.

With XP, you could try to reset your system to a prior restore point. If you can reset the system back to its state when it was still working OK, that might prevent the need for a complete reload.

Be very careful with that reset, however. I had to do that here last month because of a messup with Norton, and my system is messed up even worse (no Windows search page, Windows Media no longer words, Windows Update doesn't work, etc).

What's the story with these Spyware detecting programs crashing everybody's systems?

Didn't Guru have this same problem?

The better spyware programs are programmed to disable and mess around with the detecting programs. Just like a virus can try to disable norton...

I did reset my XP system to a prior restore point once or twice, and it worked like a charm. But I guess nothing is foolproof.

Yes, it was some form of spyware or adware that nuked my OS last month. Actually, the evidence suggests that Spybot S&D actually did the fatal damage, but that's splitting hairs. Unfortuntely, that was a W98 system, so I didn't not have restore points as an option.

Spyware/adware/malware is always getting better at interfering with its abilty to be detected and deleted. The nature of the beast.

My mother's computer (running Windows 95 of all things) was crippled beyond what I thought was repairable, and I was just about to format the thing and start over when a friend suggested I try Spy Sweeper. It worked where Spybot S&D and Adaware failed. It's not freeware, but it does have a 30 day full-function trial period.

if you still have problems give MS Antispyware a try. there is even an option to activate real-time-protection.

I haven't been home to try anything else since this morning but when I left I was running everything I could in safe mode and it was still just as screwed up. I was trying to get Adaware to run upon start up but the crap on it wouldn't let that happen either. It's also got a giant at that is pasted on the desktop and other things. It keep's planting links and programs all over the place. I really don't want to redo my whole system but it was looking like that. I'll try a restore and hope that works, I think I did it before and it seemed to fix most things. I'm gonna try to get free Avast as a last resort to try and wipe out a virus since i'm pretty sure that is what's doing it. Since I clear 300-500 things off in safe mode Adaware and then they all start over again in regular XP. Hopefully i'll be able to get it fixed.

It sounds as if reformatting is the easiest option. These blended threats could be nasty. It took me 4 hrs to clean up my cousin's computer.

A little preventative planning can help you avoid this in the future:
1.Create a limited user account if you plan on surfing in unchartered waters. You can always delete that account if you encounter problems. It should not affect the rest of your admin accounts.

2. Make sure you have the latest AV software and up to date definitions. Norton Internet Security (firewall and AV) can also detect some of these parasites. It also let you boot from CD and run a scan on your disk without booting into xp.

3. Make sure your windows has the latest paches and security updates.

4. Get a Mac

If you plan on tackling the problem check out these sites:
grc.com some of his free utilities helps secure windows against attacks.(Your Three Musketeers)

parasites more than enough to keep you busy for a couple of hours.

There are two things you need to stay away from problems like this...go to majorgeeks.com...it's loaded with freeware and shareware software..I've download AVG anti-virus, Zone Labs firewall, spybot, spyblaster(won't eliminate spy/adware but will prevent it from getting to you) a registry cleaner and many more...also spend the money to get a program called GoBack...it allows you to revert as far back as 3 days to reset your drive to what it was that day..it gives you several options of revert time and is a life saver..I can't tell you how many times I've deleted something, had a hijacker or some strange happenings on my computer and I've just gone back and reverted my drive and the problem is corrected..To check out Goback go to symantec.com/goback..it has protected my computer for 4 years now...I also run virus checks at least once a week..and the spy/adware at least twice a week..I really don't have many of these problems and if I have something I can't get rid of I just use the GoBack software and it has always eliminates the problem

Mr. Greene, sounds like you have things in good order. Might I recommend also adding the MS Antispyware that youngroman referred to in post 14? I really like it so far. I'll warn you that it runs in the background (assuming you let it), which means it can conflict with something else that is monitoring activity (spyblaster comes to mind).

You are the first person on these boards that I've seen mention AVG anti-virus. It's my Anti-Virus of choice as well. No more paying for it, no more Norton taking over the computer or McAfee update issues. I highly recommend it as well.

Now I can't even get the net to work on my home computer. I think when I ran Avast it found 25 virus's (all of which is from this program since there were none last week when I checked), but i'm thinking it might have embedded itself in files I need and then they got deleted by avast. So now it is def a reformating job. Unless anyone knows how to restore a system if somehow system restore got turned off. I don't know how it got turned off either since I used it about a year ago when I had other problems.

Some viruses are boot drive viruses, which means they stay in the bootable part of the partition. So even after you've re-installed the OS on top of the old one, they stick around. If you have 25 viruses(!!!) then you definitely need to do a format, and a full one at that. I recommend doing it in DOS with the /u command. (line is: format c:/u)

When your up and running, get Service Pack 2 and all the security updates right away. Alot of those viruses are probably preventable with an updated OS.

Yeah but they are all coming from whatever this thing was that hit me wed night. Because I ran avast on sunday and then when I did it in safemode last night it found 25 of them. So somehow all of this stuff opened a giant door to everything.

Punk,

I agree with the majority its time to reboot. You can try all the programs to get your computer running back to normal, but it seems like you computer is in way to deep.

Here is links to some programs that you should dl immediately after you reboot. Install the steps in order.

SERVICE PACK 2

MS SERVICE PACK 2.... Alot of people have said that they have had problems installing this service pack update, but after you clean out the computer completely you should have no problems what so ever updating. It’s really worth it to. It has an internal pop up blocker in IE which is pretty good. Turn on the automatic firewall also. And don’t forget to set windows update to update automatically.

AVG ANTIVIRUS

AVG ANTIVIRUS, I honestly think it’s the best on the market and it’s free! Schedule this to run daily.

Ad Aware

Ad aware SE is the safest program for parasites IMHO. Might not be the best, but the others will do more damage then harm if you don’t know what you are doing. (I haven't tried Microsoft’s yet you might want to experiment with that).

Also after you reboot set windows to automatically do certain tasks.

You can do that by going to Start-All Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Scheduled Task-Add New Task

Id recommended setting up Disk Cleanup to run once every 2 weeks. This has nothing to do with viruses or spy ware, but it will make your computer run more efficiently

You should also run disk defragmenter every week to. You get there by going to Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Defrag. You can run this anytime you want, but id recommend once a week because the longer you wait the longer the program will take to run.

Well I hope this helps good luck.

I totally agree with you on the AVG...and I can't believe it's actually free...I also swear by GoBack (not free, but worth the price)..I've had a couple times when I had a issue with spy/adware and just couldn't find the problem in a reasonable time..I just simply rebooted....reverted my drive to the way it was the day before and the problem was gone ....I'll checkout the MS Antispyware..sounds interesting

it seems that the new version of AVG will not let the smtp (your sending server) traffic out and you will get an error saying that out look cannot contact your SMTP server. So you mail will stay in your outbox...

you have to disable the outlook pluings for outgoing mail to bypass this problem..

I pay for Norton on my desktop, but really didn't want to pay for it again on the laptop.

Support for AVG Anti-Virus 6.0 extended to February 15, 2005
In November, 2004, Grisoft announced the end-of-support of AVG Anti-Virus 6.0 as of January 31, 2005. In order to provide additional time for our customers to upgrade their licenses, this date has been extended to February 15, 2005. All support, including virus database updates, program updates and technical support will be discontinued on this date!

Users of AVG 6.0 who neglect to upgrade to AVG 7.0 by February 15 will no longer be protected from viruses by AVG. In order to continue to be protected by AVG Anti-Virus, you must be using AVG 7.0.

Loaded MikeD's AV
Outlook now works fine.
Think I found it though afterwards and it was just a setting that AVG had changed.

Ran AdAware last nite.
Also loaded and then ran MSspyware.
It didn't find anything after the adaware run.

All current on XP updates also.

Good thread all.
