Can you sort by a column in a pivot table?
I have "date" in the left hand column and I want to sort them in ascending order.

I take it you tried this and it didn't work? I just gave it a go and it worked for me. If you're having trouble it may be the format of your dates. Also, I often copy the data in the pivot table just to get it out of the actual pivot format. As long as you don't need to refer to the data beneath the pivot (by double clicking on any piece of the resulting data), you can just copy the results to another worksheet or an unused part of the same worksheet. This will allow you to have a much easier time of formatting the table (if needed) and it makes the file a lot smaller (if you're working with large files and assuming you delete the actual pivot table once you copied the data). If you copy the data out of the pivot table, it's been my experience that you should not copy the very first row in the table. Otherwise you're still coping the pivot format. More than you wanted to know on a subject you didn't ask for... go figure.

allhair,
It was asking me for values or labels. labels gave me sorts like: 1/2000 1/2001 1/2002 10/2000 10/2001 10/2002 11/2001 11/2002 . . . . 12/2000 12/2001 . . . 2/2000 2/2001 2/2002 .. . . 3/2000
See the problem?
Whe I click "values" it does let me select a range. I suppose it may be the format of my dates. Yes, I do need to refer to the data underneath as my client likes to click on/off the various tabs.
I can send it to you if you want to try to help?

Yep, your example above is a format issue. If the data's sensitive, you can ship me a sample or at least a two column file, with one column being the dates in question, the second being the dates numbered 1 to whatever, so you can reorder them and match them once I send the file back.
I've dealt with this before, but it'll take a bit of playing around to remember what the solution was...

Anytime... If this is something you need to do repeatedly you could write a macro that would automate much of the process... use the Record New Macro tool...
