0 Subject: Ceres popups

one of the pcs here at work, has popup ads that are constant and RELLY slowing the system. On the blue bar at the top of the popups, is the word CERES. A google for ceres, returns all kinds of things, but none popup related, ad related etc.

Adaware/Spybot have both been downloaded, installed, updated and run and while they found/eliminated many things, this ceres bs wasnt one of them.

anyone have any knowledge of what to do next?

thanks in advance.

if it's XP then make sure you have SP2 then click on tools-->Add on's in Internet Explorer and anything that doesn't look lke it should be there disable. Otherwise download a BHO program such as BHODemon and uncheck any BHO's that don't look right.

Nowdays the biggest issues with computers seems to be spyware/adware. My steps for getting rid of them goes something like this. Download spybot & adaware and update both programs. Go into add/remove programs and remove and spyware programs that are listed there. If it's windows 2000 or XP I download Microsofts new spyware program(doesn't work on 98). Also if you have XP then make sure you have SP2. Restart computer in safe mode (by hitting the f8 when the computer is starting until you get the menu and choose safe mode). Go into Internet Explorer and click on tools -->internet option and delete all cookies, Temp files and history. In security tab set settings back to defaults unless you have them changed for a reason. Run both spybot and adaware.
If you have SP2 then go to programs and choose add-ons and disable any add-on that doesn't look right. If you don't have XP SP2 then BHODemon is a decent program for disabling Add-ons but it can be a bit annoying. Usually these steps will get rid of just about all spyware. If you are still having trouble then Hijackthis is another good program to get.

If it's windows 2000 or XP I download Microsofts new spyware program(doesn't work on 98).

This seems to be GREAT so far for my XP machine. It finds much more than the others.

Ah.. Glad to see i'm not the only one fighting this. This is one of the hardest adwares i have ever had to get rid of. Spybot, adaware, microsoft's adware .. none would get rid of this. hijack this didn't help, Trendmicro, AVG still did not help. Deleting temp files and cookies did nothing. Ran a host of other adware programs and still could shake this thing.

Finally found something on the internet on how to manually remove this. Had to delete a bunch of registry entries and searched for ceres on my pc and deleted any dlls associated with ceres. Also there suppose to be a buddy.exe that needs to be deleted. After doing this I am not getting any pop ups. I printed out the instructions so unfortunately i don't have the link to the intructions. I will look for it and re-post if i can find it.

Good Luck!

Problem: Adblaster. It was slowing down my computer.

Adaware removes it. So far so good.

But it keeps coming back. Pretty well every day. Adaware needs a reboot to get rid of it completely, so it's an annoyance.

I don't suppose there's any way of keeping it off my computer in the first place?

Toral - Try running adaware in safe mode. To get into safe mode keep hitting F8 as the PC is booting until you get the menu.

The answer is to tell your Dad. Keeping the problems a secret won't help.

Well, I guess I'll make it another agreement with Mike D.
Better to tell him and work it out than to face the consequences later.

Fully aware that your computer is at risk.
But, better to lose it for a short time and come up with a workable solution than to have him find out later on his own and lose it for a very long time.
Just looking at how I would react.

he said he knew what it was and that he has had to deal with it before and he knows that there is no way that he knows possible (and he works on computers 24 7) to get rid of ceres and he said that adaware doesnt help if you want to get rid of it for ever it only works for a while.
PS. sorry if you know this already)

no way to remeove it???????

that simply defies all logic. If it can be put on a computer, it can be removed from a computer. I dont know how ....yet. lol But there absolutely has to be a method for doing so. This one though, is a particularly stubborn sob and has proven quite difficult.
