Subject: Installing Windows without an access code

Trying to set up an old machine that my job gave me. IT guy gave me a Windows 2000 Pro setup disk, but I don't have the 25 digit code it asks me for. Any ideas? |

MITH, look at the disk or the sleeve and see if he didn't write it on one or the other.

OK, similar but unrelated question. I'm gonna blow out my hard drive tonight. I looked around this morning and I have my XP startup disk for reinstallation but couldn't find the security code. I seem to remember that I can retreive it from my computer. Anyone know how?

If XP came installed originally with your computer, the code might be on the case of your computer somewhere. Same is true of Windows 2000.

No I had to install it on the machine when I got it. I remember writing the code on one of the booklets that came with teh software package, which is definitely still *someplace* in my apartment. But I'm under the impression that I can find the code someplace in windows on my machine.

Isn't it listed when you go into Control Panel and then System? On the page that says the system you are running, amount of memory, etc? I'm at work and can't do it.
I think it is also listed when you look at your system information (via Accessories' shortcuts, or by typing into the Run command---MSINFO IIRC).

Yeah I'm at work too and don't have access to my Control Panel on this computer. MSINFO doesn't work and system info on this machine doesn't show a security code. I'll ask the IT guys. Thanks.

You should be able to find it by typing 'pcinfo' in the run command...worked for me and I'm at work myself.
It is the OS Serial number.

I don't even have a run command at work. I'm jealous. ;)

OK, for XP Pro - Go to Control Panel Click on System Under the General tab is all the info you want.
