Subject: Setting up a macro to run overnight

Suppose I have an Excel macro that I would like to run at 6:00am every day. The Macro could be set up to run automatically when the spreadsheet is loaded, so perhaps what I really need is software that would open a specified spreadsheet at a predetermined time.
What's the best way to do this? Is anything built into Windows XP (Pro) to do this, or do I need some extra software? |

Guru,
I'm pretty sure you could buy software to run this on a daily basis.
If you want a quick fix (read: hack) here's how I would do it -
Open Excel and go to Tools->Options->General Change your default file location to point to the file where the macro is.
Then go to Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools -> Scheduled Tasks. This is the Windows Task Scheduler. You can create a profile to open up excel at 6am on a daily basis.
Hope this helps until you find a permanent solutions.

Scheduled Tasks:
Start - Accessories - System Tools - Scheduled Tasks

Sorry I mixed it up, in Excel you would need to change either the default startup directory or add your excel file (w/ macro) to your XLStart directory.
To change the default startup directory you can change the path by going to Tools->Options->General as well

The spreadsheet includes links to external spreadsheets, which I do not want to update when it runs. When the sheet loads, Excel always prompts for a Yes/No as to whether I want to update the workbook with changes to the external workbooks.
Can I set this up so that when the sheet loads, it automatically skips past this need for a response?
Or should I just redesign the spreadsheet to eliminate external links?

In Excel you should be able to go into the Tools -> Options -> Edit menu and there should be a checkbox that will suppress that prompt.
Regarding the automated running of Excel, I am sure there are many different freeware products or at least moderately priced ones that will suffice. I have one that I have used for many years, and it works very nice, at least for me, however this was not one of the free ones.

In Excel, Tools-->Options-->Edit
Uncheck 'Ask to update Automatic links'
