0 Subject: HELP WITH VIRUS

My computer has a virus that Norton AntiVirus is unable to remove. The computer is now running exceptionally slowly. When I came home from work tonight my screen had a window from NAV that said "HIGH ALERT":
Object Name: C:\WINDOWS\java\catdb.dl
Virus Name: Trojan.Vund.B
Action Taken: Unable to repair file
This virus is supposed to allow adware to be downloaded on one's computer. I did run AdAware, but there were no "critical objects" present. After multiple attempts, NAV could not remove it.
My system is a Pentium 4,about 1.6 with 750 Ram. The OS is Windows XP.
Help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!!

Norton and AdAware catch different things. If this is a virus, you should update Norton right now to make sure you are running the most updated version, set it to run on the next startup, then restart your computer.

Before you do, empty your recycling bin, etc to dump files you don't need.

If that still doesn't get it, try another antivirus like Avast.

"set it to run on the next startup"

Does this make it run before Windows loads up then? If so how do you set it up?

Thanks for the advice. I am at work and will try your(PD and GF) suggestions later.

R9-I went to that site and downloaded the latest from the "Intelligent Update." I then left NAV on to run while I am at work.

The NAV scan that I ran yesterday which did not remove the virus took 5.5 hours to complete instead of the usual 40-60 minutes. I imagine that this is a function of the virus.

Thanks again.

GF: Unfortunately, I no longer have Norton (it really messed up my system with it's restore function) so I'm not clear on how to do that anymore.

loki: If you're running windows, it might also be a good idea to download and run the very excellent Microsoft AntiSpyware program (it's free, on microsoft.com).

Loki,
You might need to boot the computer in Safe Mode and then run the Anti-Virus software from there.

As the computer is booting, start hitting F8.
That will bring you up in safe mode.

I followed all of the above suggestions as well as those at the Norton Help section on the Trojan.Vundo.B virus. As suggested I turned off System Restore and rebooted in the Safe Mode. NAV would not open in the Safe Mode giving the message "Symantec Integrater has encountered a problem and needs to close." Symantec has a pay for help service at $29.95 per incident which seems to be the next option. Would still appreciate any other ideas. THANKS!!

majorgeeks is a great site. OMG was spot on when he reccomended me going there.

things i learned recently while battling viruses:

Norton Internet Security sucks. it's a beast that clogs my computer up, and it's to complex for most users, even those of us with decent computer knowledge.

Avast is pretty good.

Spy Sweeper kicks ass.

There is a neat little too from GeekSquad.com that detects trojans and stuff on your computer. doesn't clean them, but it detects them, so you can track down on to delete them.

AdAware must be used.

Spyboy must be used.

i'd tell you more, but soon after cleaning my computer, my hard drive fried. :o) the new computer arrives tomorrow.

I finally went to the NAV pay for service 800 number, and they gave me the address that had the repair tool. Norton did not charge me--the right thing to do. They should have had this in their system before the virus could infect a computer. It is almost fully deleted now, but Symantec is requiring that users update virus information and run NAV on 5/1/05 in the PM to complete the repair.
My daughter's computer was infected with Trojan.Vundo.B also, but she uses McAfee which already had the definition in it's data base and effected the removal without the hassles incurred by myself and other users of NAV.
I did run AdAware and SpyBot which removed the adware/spyware on my computer.
