0 Subject: Obtaining Windows Cardfile

Back in the days of Windows 3.1 and before, Windows had a utility called Cardfile. Simple and barebones, it allowed you to create a lot of index-card-like things to store little pieces of information close at hand. No bells and whistles, but I loved that program.

Since Windows 95 it hasn't been included on Windows releases. I checked the Microsoft website years ago and found that Microsoft said it granted a unrestricted license to anybody with Windows 95 (and later versions, I assume) to install and use Cardfile on their computers -- if they could get a copy somehow. They don't distribute it!

Anyone have any idea how I would go about finding and downloading/installing a copy of Cardfile -- or, if necessary, a similar freeware program?

Thx.

If you have a Win95, Win98, Win98se or WinME (~shiver~) CD, use these instructions (ME is WIN_16.CAB).

If you don't, by sheer coincidence, I happen to have a Win98se disk on my desk (OK, brother in law ask me to restore his old clunker Compaq, which came with Win98). I can pull the EXE and email it to you. (91KB)

Thanx. I don't have a Windows disk. I have Windows ME pre-installed on my computer, and 2 Systems Recovery and Application Recovery disks from Hewlett-Packard which I hope is what I would use to reinstall Windows if I had to.

Could I use those? If not, your e-mailing the file to me would be much appreciated!

I have a couple of those HP recovery disks at home, but don't even know whats on them. You could search them for the associated CAB files (from the article). If the CAB files are there and you are using XP, just double click on them, then right click on the cardfile.exe and select Extract.

I emailed it either way.

Also, you may have the CABs on your machine already. Look at C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS
