0 Subject: Pop ups : Aurora-Part of the ABI network

Posted by: bibA - Sustainer [261028117] Wed, Jun 22, 2005, 01:09

I have a decent computer, and use Windows XP. Am a computer illiterate. Mainly just use my computer for this site and a couple others re: fantasy sports, and for playing on-line poker.

Have recently been getting MANY pop ups from "Aurora - Part of the ABI Network". The pop up blocker in my browser is activated on "medium". I downloaded the MSN toolbar, and then the new Google tool bar, but nothing blocks these pop ups. My Norton Antivirus tells me that I have do not have a virus, but I suspect I do have something, a worm or trojan or something?

When I Google my situation, I am given other pop up blocker sites to download, but I guess I would trust you guys more than what I find on Google.

Anyway, any suggestions for this dummy? Thanks

Do you use IE or Netscape?

Thanks. I should have also noticed that your Anti-virus software won't help with spyware. Do you have a spyware protection program? Microsoft's is excellent and I highly recommend it, even if you already have spyware seekers on your system. Download it, immediately run an update for it, then run a full system scan (Tools/Spyware Scan).

You might already have looked at this Windows XP page about blocking popups in IE with Service Pack 2 (which I'm assuming you have). But I'd do the full system scan first to clean out your system.

Have you tried going into add/remove programs and uninstalling it. Scroll through the whole list of programs in add/remov programs too see if it's there.

It is not in my add/remove programs as far as I can see.

Perm - I downloaded the Microsoft program, and followed your suggestions. The situation is a lot better. Among the "detections" found were some relating to Aurora. I am not getting anywhere near the pop ups now, although I do still get a few here and there from Aurora - ABI network. Oh well, I'll see what transpires over the next couple days. I can live with a few.

Thanks to both you guys.

I'd suggest re-booting, and running the Microsoft program again. Sometimes the spyware needs to run a couple of times, believe it or not, to get everything (and sometimes it needs to be the first and only thing running).

Glad it's better!

Well, my problems got worse before they got better. I had a computer tech come to my house. He was able to locate the Aurora crap in my computer, and get rid of it. Also had a virus that I think was related to Aurora, and Norton was unable to fix it. The tech ran what he described as an excellant virus fighter, thru antivirus.com, which did detect the virus, and delete it. It is free, and did not require being downloaded onto my computer to use.

Sounds good.

I think having multiple anti-virus and anti-spyware programs is great. At worse it's redundant which isn't a bad thing when it comes to protection.

Norton I used to like a lot, but it's turned into a huge resource hog and is very difficult to remove.

So did you download the antivirus.com program to run in the future?

It appears to me from examining the site that it would cost $49.95 to download, but that they offer free online scanning. If you want to, have a look at their site, and see whether you think I should be considering a download? Thanks so much for your advice.

Apparently this is a problem that is somehow able to attach itself to your computer. The tech that came to my house was able to locate it in the programs. He located it in the add/remove programs menu, and for some reason seemed wary about uninstalling it, and suggested I ignore the pop ups. This was unappetizing to me, so I voted we take a chance. He had to follow a couple of directions/links, and it was successfully uninstalled, and I no longer have the problem.

I think the program was listed as something similar to "ABI Network"

Irish - you are not from So Cal by any chance, are you? The tech who assisted me is good, and doesn't charge an arm and a leg.

I found the Aurora software in add/remove programs. Had to download and run the removal program from tunemypc, and it was all good!

I would suggest running the following programs:

Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4

Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition 1.06

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

I would suggest running all of these...I would be surprised if at least one of these didn't find your problem (and will likely find many other spyware/adware threats/trojans)

The Microsoft anti-spyware program is also excellent.

Don't go to tunymypc to try to remove Aurora. THey will try to charge you to remove it, it will remove it but it will place another bug on your computer. This is ILLEGAL and in direct contravention to the Supreme Court's ruling. People are contemplating a class action. I can't believe these SOB's are doing this.

Tune my PC did not charge me, so I am clear on that. But what bug should I be looking for now?

try going to www.mypctuneup.com and getting the uninstall for the aurora software. ABI software can only be removed with the uninstall there.

It makes me so mad. I have 3 spy-ware detector/ eliminators (albeit, freeware)...latest download was the one from Microsoft.

Aurora still lives, unbelieveable.

The Microsoft program spots it, "deletes" it, yet a back-to-back scan shows it's still there. Did 5 Scans in a row...it's always there: Nail.exe. I tried scan/delete->reboot comp.->scan/delete.

Aurora still lives.

The sick irony of it all, is the problem is named: "transponder.ABetterInternet.Aurora"

ABetterInternet

Oh, well...I'll continue to try to persevere.

What a hoot...

A while back, I tried www.mypctuneup.com once to solve the problem, and I couldn't get the uninstall to run right.

I gave it another shot right after I wrote the/my last tread.

*POOF* It's gone!

Wootsville!

Use: mypctuneup.com/aurora

No mo' Nail.exe (knock on wood)

I think I got the software from overstock.com. I made a purchase last night and had this problem the next morning. Thanks to Casey for the pctune.com link it finally seems to have solved the problem. WHAT A NIGHTMARE!!

As a self-employed computer techie in Northeastern US, I give full support to Counterspy (made by Sunbelt Software & designed for spy/mal/ad/scumware & ONLY $20! w/ renewals $10!!) & Kaspersky Labs' Anti-Virus Scanner (Personal Pro, which is the business-level equivalent and admittedly slightly more expensive than some others but well worth it). Both destroy the competition IMHO. In terms of spyware removal, MS & Sunbelt use different databases (Sunbelt's being more inclusive of "spyware" & more apt to remove it), though both have a similar engine. As for AV, bear in mind that a lot of virus corps are providing "solutions" for a fee after you get a virus on your system; I would ordinarily call this a "warranty" when you run their software, but they do not apparently. KAV consistently finds more & sucks fewer/less resources to protect your computer. And, no, I do not work for either company; when my clients ask what's my virus & spyware recommendation/solution, I have to have an answer. And if you need a firewall solution, you should consider Sygate's Personal Firewall--it's free & very powerful (but not overly so for novice computer users)!

Please be sure to notice that this is from MyPCTuneup, NOT TuneMyPC. My company, Tune My PC is not responsible for this mess. We actually work with our clients to make sure they are protected.
