0 Subject: Changing IP addresses for cable connection

I switched over to a cable moden a few months ago (from DSL) and have been very pleased with the change. One problem that has arisen, however, is that I cannot find how to change my IP address. In my DSL connection, I'd just open up the modem program and click on "refresh/renew IP Address" and it was done.

This is coming up because the IP address I have is coming up on a spam watch web site as being a source of spam (it isn't, but it's very easy for spammers to fake a return IP address--in this case, mine).

Anyone know how to change the IP address for a cable modem?

Try unpluggin your cable modem for a couple of minutes and then plugging it back in.

It really depends, PD. When you release your IP and immediately renew it, many DHCP servers will just give you the same one (many will give you the same one even with long gaps between the release and the renew). With my cable modem at home, it rarely changes, but does from time-to-time. A friend of mine in Louisiana gets a new IP *every time*. And here at work, our DHCP server gives me the same IP for both computers regardless of the lag between releasing and renewing.

Thanks guys. When it slows down I'll try to just unplug it for awhile.

DHCP Components and Concepts

What you need to do is allow your lease time to expire. What's your lease time? Only your provider knows for sure. Give 'em a call and blow their mind when you ask them, "Hey, what's your DHCP lease time?"

If you're connecting through a router you should be able to find your Lease information among other useful things inside its administration utility. If you're connecting directly through the modem I'm not really sure though.

from with in a dos box or from run-->cmd-->

ipconfig /all

on win xp and NT 2000 boxes will give you all the ip information about the adapter including when the lease was obtained and when it will expire.

Thanks for all the advice, fellas. I haven't responded since one problem that arose when I re-set the IP address still isn't resolved: My email program (Eudora) now can only receive mail, not send it (to send I'm now forced to first check mail through my email ISP's webmail page in order to respond, or to cut & paste the message into the web-based email page).

I realize this all is coming from the fact that my email address is different from my cable provider (eclipse.net vs ptd.net), and the inability for my mail to get sent is an anti-spam feature. But it was working before I changed IP addresses, and (assuming I'll need to change IP addresses again, or that it'll be done for me at some point) I have to figure out how to (again) send mail via Eudora.

When I figure it out I'll post it here, since I'm almost certain to forget!

BTW, I changed antivirus (from Norton to Avast) in the hopes that this will change the problem. That allowed me to at least receive mail, but I still can't send from Eudora, or Outlook, or any other program.

i would of thought that changing your smtp server to the one provided by your ISP will let you send mail.

from your last post it sounds like your currnet isp is nt letting you send email because you are using an incorrect SMTP server so it seems like, to your ISP, you are trying to relay your mail thu your them, so they deny the email.

cheers
