Subject: Weird Excel Problem Not Sure If Simple

I'm doing a reconciliation at work and I'm changing the format to be a little more reader friendly so I'm using a text formula to break things up a little.
I am getting a problem where the formula does not calculate, it just shows the formula in the cell.
For instance...
=right(H20,20)
Instead of showing the output (Ex. Jane's Expense Report), it shows what I typed above.
I like to think of myself as someone who knows Excel (I'm Microsoft Certified in Excel & Access so I can't be that dumb or can I? :) )
It does not do this for mathematical formulas.
The version is Excel 2000. |

Select Tools > Options, select the view tab, and make sure that the Formula box is unchecked.

Still having the same problem. Thanks for the effort though.

You don't havea " ' " symbol at the beginning of the cell do you?
Also look at the cell formatting to see if it is set to display the text or something else.

If the cell format is set to "Text", it will do what you are seeing. Try setting it to "General".

Eureka!
Thanks Guru.
I was working with a Peachtree to Excel export and everything must've been formatted as text. Not surprisingly considering the columns I was working with were...um...text.
I never would've checked that figuring that I was using a text related formula.
