For some reason my parent's computer stops loading after the initial Win XP screen does its thing. It just sits there and wont go forward. No reboot, blue screen of death, shutdown, etc. I've really got no idea why it wont load, anyone ever seen something like this?

I've confirmed that the computer isn't overheating and the memory works fine in another computer.

have you tried rebooting in safe mode?

Yeah, did a spyware scan and virus check, nothing. It actually finally goes into windows after about 10 minutes of waiting. Not always, but sometimes. I'm out of ideas as to what it could be... What is windows doing during this bootup period anyway?

Is Norton on this unit?

I've ran across it with Norton related software and spent a couple of hours removing every trace of the piece of intrusive software.

If you can go into Safe mode then click on Start then run and type in msconfig

Choose Selective Startup and uncheck every box and reboot. Does the computer load fine now ?? If so go back into msconfig and check off 2 boxes and reboot. Once you narrow it down to which file is having the issued then go into that tab and uncheck half of the stuff in there and keep going until you find the driver/file that is causing the problem.

Had a family member incur a similar problem recently ... solved by repairing Windows XP.

You must have access to the computer's Windows XP CD.
