0 Subject: Virus Program Scam? Help needed!

My Norton Virus program expired, so I went to do the online renewal. Clicked the link, and without realizing this popped up over top of the Norton renewal page.

I was too busy to notice, and I filled out the information, clicked purchase and then was directed to a download site. On the download site, my old Norton wouldn't let me download the .exe file (stating it was a trojan virus)and that is when I realized I wasn't on a Norton site.

I called the 1-800 number to get some info, and the number wasn't in service. I called the long distance number and was put on hold for about 5 minutes, being told the whole time I was "first in line". Finally they asked me to leave my contact info because they were experiencing a high volume of calls. Now I am still waiting to hear back from them.

Anyone hear of this? Did I get scammed? Help!!! (ps, I put a hold on the credit card...)

I did a brief google on winantivirus. Found this link to be of particular interest:

In short, it sounds as if you've been had. I'm thinking, you'll want to tell your CC company about it, so they can put in n their alert file and potentially prevent others from falling victim. You'll probably also need to change your CC account nr and any other financial data you gave them.

Our bank, Washington Mutual, now offers a program I think is REALLY neat and long overdue for the mainstream. Its a no-fee "checking account", with no check draft authority. The account is opened with $1, and when we do on0line purchases, we use that account. We can go on-line and transfer funds into it, to cover the purchases, and the transfer is immediate, w/o regard to time of day. This way, the only account info given out, is to an account with a running balance of $1. Talk to your financial institution, and see if they offer, could begin to offer, this same kind of program.

I'm not clicking on that link to look! But it doesn't sound good.

Tons of stuff you can read under google-groups about this problem.

I called my Credit Card company, and there was a charge for the program, $48 Canadian, but no further charges yet. I was thinking after a little while on hold that someone somewhere could be racking up the charges, and keeping me on hold was their way of delaying me from calling the Credit Card company.

Luckily, no other charges have appeared.

It's part and parcel of the issue I had with virtumonde. A nasty dll file, ssqpm.dll resides in the system32 directory and is a pain to remove.

I ended up downloading spysweeper since it was the only app that actually deleted it.

Just got a call from the company, which is located in Singapore, and they have told me they are going to cancel my purchase order...

We shall see when the statement arrives...

tell your CC company to cancel the charge. They shouldd delete/suspend the charge, pending their investigation into it. You do have the right to contest the charges, regardless of who issued your card.

My Norton also recently expired, and luckily I was able to re-up with no problems.

I wonder if they (Norton) know or care about this situation.

BTW, you can buy Norton AV 2006 for just $20 (after rebate) from CompUSA right now. That's what I did rather than simply renew my old program's subscription. I'm not sure what CompCANADA charges though. ;)
