0 Subject: Web based email alternatives

My Dad has an old Mac with an old operating system (OS 9, I believe). He needs the older operating system because he uses some music writing software that requires it.

This limits his choice of email software, as most current alternatives are only supported for OS 10.

He is not a frequent email user (my Mom has a new Mac and she controls the family email!), but he does occasionally have a need to send emails with attachments directly from his computer. He is now set up with a roadrunner broadband connection, so a web based email service seems like a reasonable possibility.

I (think I) know that hotmail, yahoo, and netscape each still offer free email, with a web based system for accessing and sending email. Which is the best deal? Which has the most intuitive setup? Which has the most flexible mail storage (sent and received)? Are there other alternatives I should consider?

Does google mail work with the older OS versions. I have a mac at home also, but it has OS10 on it.

My parents are both computer illiterate, but they have found g-mail to be pretty easy to use and it has less restrictive limits on the size of files that you can send and receive. I think it might bey 10M with gmail.

I'm sure plenty of people could send you or him an invite to join.

You know, he might want to look into OldVersion.com which might have some software for him still around.

The only reason I suggest this is that if he is sending attachments then the storage he gets from a web-based email system might get used up pretty quickly. He wouldn't have that problem with a program which is resident on his computer.

My g-mail account has 2.6 Gigs of space on it, I don't the is going to fill that up anytime soon.

Actually there is a cool program you can get that allows you to use your gmail account as an additional harddrive, that shows up on "My Computer" I use it as an extra place to store digital photos that I never ever want to lose.

I know I have received gmail invites before, but never followed through, and don't know where I have them stashed. If someone could send me one now, I'd appreciate it. It may be an option.

If I have my own gmail account, then I assume I can send him an invite if that turns out to be desirable?

Note that if you get a gmail invite to a yahoo account, it goes to your bulk mail.

Frick[3] (or anyone) - can you point me in the direction of that program that allows for using the account as an extra hard drive?

Here's the website for the Windows XP version. My friend who pointed it out also mentioned that their was a linux version first so it is possible that a mac version is out there somewhere.
