Subject: Computer Utility Programs

Hey all...
I am looking to buy a new all-in-one computer service program for my pc. Was checking out a few of them at Best Buy but there were so many.
Looking to speed up my computer, get rid of junk, repair problems, etc., etc.
Someone recommeded System Mechanic 6 but I have found nothing but bad reviews for it.
Anyone have any suggestions for a great utility program? |

I don't like the all-in-ones, but then again, I don't like buying things either with the wealth ofr freeware on the web. A lot of people use Norton and it ends up reaching its tentacles out into places it shouldn't be, causing problems.
If you think of specific things you want to do, as I mentioned, there are lots of great freeware downloads available.
As an example-----registry cleaners-----I recommend Easy Cleaner.

It took over an hour to get all of pre-installed (3 months free! wahoo! Not) Norton off my wife's new HP. Once I was through, however, it booted faster, with fewer lags. The thing's an oinker.
My IT guy recommended a high level registry editor as well, though it wasn't easy cleaner and I haven't checked it out yet.
It used to be simple to stop programs from starting up on boot. No longer. Their is at least two places for them to hide, and removing them means scary registry editing. I just have to completely uninstall and delete them.

I would recommend NOT using Norton. I found it caused more frustration than fixes, and was hard to clean off the computer.
I've been test driving 'System Mechanic 6' the last couple weeks, and am impressed so far. I have had no problems, and it seems to help things. I will probably go ahead and purchase it before the new year.
As far as registry repair, I do recommend Registry First Aid. It does an excellent and fast job of registry clean-up ... far superior to what Norton SystemWorks was giving me.

bili it may be JV16 PowerTools, which isn't free, but is very good. Ironically they have a full Power Tools "suite" for $30, which is probably good too.

I've been running Avast anti-virus. The personal use is free. Auto-updating of def-files. Working well for me on a few different machines.

Norton is an incredible resource hog. It is difficult to diagnosis problems with it, nearly impossible to remove completely, and they often cause conflicts with other programs.

AntiVirŪ PersonalEdition Classic for Windows 98/Me/NT/XP/2000/NT has been running on at least 7 computers I'm aware of flawlessly for a couple of years. Free.

It is always better to do your own tweaks to speed up your computer. Most of the time it is a matter of not starting programs when windows starts.But If you don't have the time or the know how, I found that x-setup be the best tweaking utility. It has been around for at least the past 6 years. It used to be free, but from what I can tell, the new version is an $8 shareware now.
