Windows Exploit
I'm not a big chicken little guy, but I suspect this one could rank up there in stupidity levels.

This hit my buddy's machine 2 days ago. I pitched him so much crap about getting spyware and why didn't he have his machine updated with all the latest...blah blah blah.

Whatever was running was preventing me from getting the latest updates from Windows Update, so I went into task manager and killed off anything that looked suspicious (sorry I don't have more details). I then restarted IE, and it let me check for new updates. Low and behold, he had already had all them. I loaded MS AntiSpyware and left with it running.

I haven't been back, but according to this article, it isn't just spyware, its a virus/trojan horse.

Don't know what the fix is for it yet, but when I get it I'll post it here. (Suspect I'll be busy prepping the solution for here at work.)

Forgot to mention, per Microsoft, this exploit isn't just a XP thing, but rather "the flaw is present in every Windows version dating back to Windows 98."

Here is the Microsoft Advisory.

Should folks be applying this patch, assuming they can find it?

Myself, I'd shy away from unofficial fixes.

Microsoft Preparing Patch for Windows Flaw.

I'd just verify I have updated Virus def files for now.

ZDNet says yes.

Actually, it's F-Secure and StormCenter that are doing the recommending. ZDNet is just doing the reporting.
