0 Subject: WebSite Redirect Question

Ok guys, I know I don't normally post a thing on here, but I needed to seek some assistance...

I have a website here at my agency, we host our payroll data for employees who dont wish to receive a paystub when they are direct deposit... Anyhow, when we do server maintenance we want to be able to have everything forwarded to a web page that says the server is down.

Problem is, we use SSL encryption and when someone comes to our site, the default.htm redirects them to another page... if they are already past the default.htm or if the have the other page bookmarked, they are able to browse the site when it is technically under maintenance.

We could set up another site on the same IIS machine, but that is a pain and what we have been doing and are trying to avoid that... Any Ideas? I know there is a way I have seen it done.

How about inserting a javascript link (to a .js file) which "appears" at the top of each page at your site. For most of the time, the script would do nothing. But when you wanted to take the site down, you could put a redirect in the script code. That way, no matter what page is accessed, it will roll over to the "server down" page.

You could embed some form of switch (perhaps via a cookie reference) that would allow developers to continue to access the underlying pages while others are being redirected.

For example, every page at this forum references a script that normally prints either the GuruPatron message or an ad. If I wanted to, I could change the script (which is contained in a separate file) to redirect to any other URL, which would effectively take the forum offline.
