0 Subject: CD Player Problems

The CD/DVD player in my (fairly new) laptop has recently stopped working. I put a disc in and it just never appears or reads it etc.

Anyone ever had this happen? Its like the drive doesn't exist.

I am going to call Dell, but was just curious if this has happened to anyone else before.

Sounds like it could be a driver problem.
Go to explorer and see if it is seeing the drive.
Also, you can go in to bios to see if it is showing up.

Is it that the drive appears but it doesn't show anything in the player? Or no drive at all?

Its as though my computer doesn't know I have the drive. I put a cd in and try and play the cd through WMP or Real Player or even just view the files through My Computer and its not even showing that its in there.

Great One: Let me know how the call from Dell goes. If you can understand anyone in their tech support departmnet you win a gold star. I recently bought a new PC and I didn't buy a Dell because every tech I ever called was probably in India and I couldn't understand a single word.

Is your CD/DVD player modular? That was an issue with a Gateway laptop we have. Are you trying more than one disk?

Definitely sounds like a driver issue. I would try updating the driver before calling Dell. Heck, I would try taking it to a Priest for an exorcism before calling Dell. :)

On a side note, I spilled some soda on my laptop keyboard and have a whole new set of problems lol... they are stickin and clickin etc. thank god its only a couple keys.

Boxman, I think you're pretty new around here. Maybe I'm wrong, but I just started noticing all your posts in the Poli Forum. Anyway, what I wanted to say is that you are a funny guy. And we need those kinds here. So welcome. And if you've been around forever and I was just too dense to notice, don't worry. I'm going to sit on my spot on the floor and be quiet now.

Can someone briefly explain what "updating the driver" would entail? I don't know much about computers. I will poke around the net to see if I can get the answer as well...

Figured out updating the driver, windows says no available updates unfortunately. I do see my CD/DVD showing with a big yellow question mark in my Device Manager.

How to troubleshoot unknown devices that are listed in Device Manager in Windows XP (at Microsoft.com) offers a few suggestions that might be worth checking out before you resort to contacting Dell Support.

In device manager, right click on the cd/dvd player and uninstall it.

Then go into add hardware and run the wizard.

It should find the cd/dvd player and reinstall it just fine.

Wierdest thing just happened. I was about to call in and everything and all of a sudden its working again. Maybe all that playing around the other night with device manager I hit on something.

Thanks all!

Now if I could figure out how get these keys to stop sticking! Stupid soda... think I am going to have to buy a new keyboard altogether. That is possible right, you can replace a laptop keyboard? I am off to investigate... :)

Motley Crue: I've lurked around these parts for a while and then just decided to speak up. Thanks. Now please enjoy one of my favorite movie segments of all time. :)

Tommy: "What's really funny is, the f****** bank job away in Seacaucus. I'm in the middle of the f***** weeds laying down. He comes over and says, what are you doing? I said, I'm resting. Here, you're resting? Go to the f***** beach or the park. I said i'm rest-- I know I'm resting. I'm resting. They pull me in, they start giving me all kinds of questions, you know, this and that. He says, oh, so what are you gonna tell us, tough guy? I said, my usual, zero, nothing, I tell you... The f***. He says no, you're gonna tell us something today, tough guy. I said alright, I'll tell you something, go f*** your mother. Bing, pow, boom, bing. You saw the paper, Anthony. My head was out like this, the p****. So now, I'm coming around, you know, all I see in front of me, this big p**** again. He says, oh, what do you wanna tell me now, tough guy? I said, bing, what are you still doing here, I thought I told you to go f*** your mother. I thought he was gonna s***. Pow, boom, bing. The f*****. I wish I was big just once. Big cops."
Henry: "You're a pisser. You're really funny. You're really funny."
Tommy: "Uh-huh. What do you mean, I'm funny?"
Henry: "It's funny, you know, you're... It's a good story. It's funny. You're a funny guy."
Tommy: "What do you mean? You mean, the way I talk?"
Henry: "It's just, you know, you're-- you're just funny. It's-- you're fun-- You know, the way you tell the story and everything."
Tommy: "Funny how? I mean, what's funny about it?"
Anthony Stabile (Frank Adonis): "Tommy, no, you got it all wrong. Hey..."
Tommy: "Ho-ho, Anthony, he's a big boy, He knows what he said? What'd you say?"
Anthony: "You're right."
Tommy: "Funny how?"
Henry: "W-- it's..."
Tommy: "What?"
Henry: "Just, you know, you're funny. That's all."
Tommy: "You mean, let me understand this, 'cause, I don't-- You know, maybe it's me, I'm a little f***** up, maybe. But I'm funny how? I mean, funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh? I'm here to f***** amuse you? What do you mean, funny? funny how? How am I funny?"
Henry: "I-- No-- Just, you know, how you tell the story. What?"
Tommy: "No, no, I don't know, you said it. How do I know? You said I'm funny. How the f*** am I funny? What the f*** is so funny about me? Tell me, tell me what's funny."
Henry: "Get the f*** out of here. Tommy."
Tommy: "You mother*****, I almost had him. You stuttering p****, here. Frankie, was he shaking? I wonder about you sometimes, Henry. You may fold under questioning."

So my disappearing CD/DVD drive is back - and now I am after my 90 day limited warranty so I would have to pay to have them help me.

Any ideas? I tried the unistall/reinstall the driver trick to no avail.

I can get it to recognize the drive exists - but it has a little yellow exclamation point over it indicating there is a problem.

Getting this error -> Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

And I tried to rollback the driver - but there aren't any previous versions to do so.

GO, I usually try to follow the most simple path.Try cleaning the lens(the cleaning cd's are pretty cheap and you can use it for you cd player)

If that doesn't help, find out the maker of the drive and download a driver from their site( I also beleive you can download drivers from the Dell site if you have an account-I'm not a Dell user)Then try this:uninstall the drive, reboot in safe mode, and install/update to the new driver from the location you downloaded it.

If that doesn't help, it might be a software related issue. Specifically Roxio if that is what you are using. Try updating their software or any other burning software that might be installed.

If that doesn't help, it might be a hardware related issue. Could be a number of different things from a loose connection to a bad drive even a bad motherboard. Don't mean to scare you, but most likely it is a driver or software issue.
