I'd love comments on the proposed front page above for my web site. Clear? Confusing? Any suggestions?

the site is sorely lacking in T&A....

I plan to add both "T" and "A" buttons on the left column...

I like the nice and clean layout. The company name, The Permissions Company, makes it pretty clear what you are about. I was confused a bit by the main graphic - my first thought was that those look like bolts of cloth or wallpaper sample books. However, upon further reflections, I think they are a row of old and rare books. The lack of any identifying text, like titles along the spine, still has me a bit unsure what they represent.

My overall impression is - I like the clean and simple layout.

Are you planning on handling photos, music and other copyrighted material or are you sticking with the written word?

We're mostly doing text, though we clear music, photos, and cartoons as needed. Music, photo, and fine art clearances have specialists so anything which involves more than a little I defer to other people.

We're starting to concentrate more on the administration of rights these days instead of the requesting permissions side--it's easier to do, frankly, and I can get some income for smaller publishers.

Very, very nice. I like everything but the font for the date in the upper right - the Microsfot default crap. I'd suggest the same font you use right above it in "Call us today"

Well, reading that last paragraph, I don't like the sound of, "if we can't help you immediately..." I don't think it is a good idea to even suggest "we can't help you".

Good suggestions, thanks. I'm not altogether sold on the last paragraph either, but it's something to work on.

I can make the font change. And I just noticed the "Welcome to" line needs to be tweaked (I want to refer to my company with a capitalized "The").

I really appreciate the feedback. When you work for yourself you often don't get good feedback from people outside the field.

I agree with SZ; I'd lose the sentence after "Contact us." The sentence after that fully conveys the low pressure, stop and browse message.

Very impressive, PD.

I want to know what some of the "pitfalls to avoid" are...

Mostly Detroit Tigers. Also Kenny Rogers. Both the singer and pitcher.

I think you just failed to avoid one, BH.

PD actually copyrighted that statement, and now you owe him all your rookie Jeremy Giambi baseball cards, and your best 2006 TSN team as of the all star break.

I think "pitfalls to avoid" is now part of Perm Dude's "premium content" package.

PD,
The page looks great, though I would echo Richard's comments about the background look. It resembles wallpaper at a glance, though its fairily easy to figure out they are books. Like he said, it leaves the question: what are they there for?

On the positive side for that graphic, it does add a splash of color to the page.

Very professional looking and overall well done.

Maybe if you lost the watermark scribbles over the books (it's fine on the border), it wouldn't look so much like wallpaper.

Perm Dude: Lose the "if we can't help you immediately" line. That whole sentence should go.

Clarify on "Pitfalls to avoid" unless if that is industry jargon that a layman like me wouldn't know. If your customer would understand that, leave it alone.

Have you tested how the page reads with the wide book logo? Is the script on the right easy to read without scrolling? If so, keep it. Otherwise maybe adjust it a little.

I like the book thing if that's your logo (or is it the pen?). I have a client in the medical literature field and their logo is a 3 dimensional triangle. A logo doesn't have to make sense with your industry, it has to be memorable in a positive way.

Great job. Looks really good. Keep it up.

Very nice. Clean. Professional. Approachable. Looks easy enough to navigate. The only thing I'd echo is to change (if possible) that @#&* Microsoft script for the date.

Actually, I was serious. As an occasional aspiring writer, I often wonder about what I actually have permission to write. And someone like Perm Dude is just the guy to ask.

Good to see it elicited funny responses from biliruben and RSF. You can take the Pacific Northwest out of the boy...

Oh wait, is that joke copyrighted?

I think it goes, you can take a boy out of the Pacific Northwest, but...

I agree with the suggestions above. The only one I would add is on the very top right where it says, "Call us today", I would take out the word "us" so it says "Call Today" or even change it to "Call Now".

Thanks for all the advice, guys. We've taken nearly all of it and incorporated it into the site www.Permissionscompany.com. Still a bunch of treaking to go (such as an out-of-date client list I need to update, and other small textual changes). But I appreciate the looks and advice.
