Using a modem? Try re-connecting first, since noise on the line might be effecting speed.

You might also want to do a defrag of the drive. While you're at it, do all the other maintenance stuff (anti-virus checks, anti-spyware sweeps, empty trash & cache, etc). In other words, do a thorough clean up in case there's just a lot of junk slowing you down.

I had to upgrade SpywareBlaster the last time I checked for updates. When I went to Download.com to get it, I was checking out their more popular downloads.

I downloaded the registry mechanic and used the free part to do some cleaning up. My computer was already running pretty good, but it is running even faster now. I don't know how much RAM you have, but there is another program on there called FreeRAM-XP-Pro. I think if you sort by the top 50 downloads it is on the second page, if my link doesn't work. The editors gave it a 5 for 5 rating.

I also download the All-In-One SecretMaker. It has some cool options. The one that might help you out is the Windows cleaner. As you perform work on your computer, numerous temporary files and log entries are created. This option cleans them out when they are no longer needed. Some of the other options it has are a Worm Hunter (keep those buggers away), spam filters and blockers, assorted blockers for movies, banners, pop-ups, and intruders, cookie keeper list and cookie erasers, privacy protector, security watchdog, and a bunch of other stuff.

There are several other programs I have running on my comp that are available at this site. They won't help with your speed issue, but they will keep the bad stuff away; Ad-aware- they had an updated version. Runs quicker than my old version. Then again, maybe after using the Registry Mechanic my system was just working quicker. Spybot- Search & Destroy, SpywareBlaster, AVG, Zone Alarm, and Hijack This.

There was one more I downloaded called Advanced Windows Care. From the read me file: Slow down, freeze and crash are over. With the technology of Intelli HyperSpeed 2005, Advanced WindowsCare empowers you to run your PC faster, more stably and more efficiently than with any other system utilities.
I think that could help you optimize your system and speed it up.

How are you connected to the internet? Sounds like you just need the ethernet driver for your network port.

What operating system are you using? did you do a clean install or you used a recovery CD?are you using a firewall? which one? which antivirus? configured correctly? Is is a dual boot system( you mentioned partition)

I think R9 meant to ask you about the driver for your network card. If you just reformatted, you should not have any registry problems. Don't mess with those 3rd party utilities.Now Aassuming that you are not on a home network ( your netwok card is connected directly to your cable modem),

1.right click on my computer->properties->hardware tab->device manager

under network adapters it will tell you what type of network card you're using. Now go to that company's website and download an updated driver.

2. is your firewall configured correctly? Try turning it off and see if ther is any significant increase in your speed.

3. If nothing has helped at this point, you might need to increase your RWIN: go to "dslreports.com", click on "tools"( on left) and then "tweak test". run the test. It will then recommend what you need to do to increase your speed. Also, I found that their speed test is one of the most accurate around.

There is also a ton of helpful information on that site you might want to read up on.

after trying severeal trial versions of anti spyware, i've come to the conclusion that the problem is deep spyware. I have adware but it doesnt get rid of it. The software that finds it will only let me scan. Like webroot and spyware nuker. Any suggestions on a really good free piece of software?
