If you get a deal on Dells, that's the best way to go for a laptop. Are you locked in to certain models or can you choose anything off their site?

And, if you do choose from the Dell site, make sure to go through Guru's link so he gets a kickback:

i am looking for a cheaper model, but i really don't like dell because they start out at 500 dollars and then to add anything it ends up being around 1000.

Do you really need a laptop? Laptops are harder and more expensive to upgrade in the future, you have to worry about battery life and are more fragile.

If money is your #1 criteria, get a desktop.

i already have a desktop but i need a laptop to take to coffee shops, where i like to work.

Just dell makes me sick when you see things like

standard screen
better screen (can see thigns more clearly)$100
Ultimate Clarity screen $150 dollars

Just makes me wonder what a standard screen is, but it sounds like crap...

The operating system seems fine!!!
256 MB ram (who uses this)to upgrade to 512 ($40)
40 GB --> 80 GB $75

internal wireless add $20

eventually it adds up to abotu $1000 dollars...

So my question for you guys is:

1.) what brand notebooks are just as good as dell??
a.)i like sony vaio's, and gateways. (any others I can look at)
b.)Do you have any notebooks thatyou recommend?

Dell seems like a good computer site but they start off with ancient specifications...

My Dad loves his two IBM laptops, and he claims they are more competitive these days, though I haven't looked myself.

i'm a firm believer that when it comes to computers, you often get what you pay for.

paying 1000 bucks for a lap top doesn't seem like a big deal if you're looking for decent performance...

Tree,
So are you saying that Dell's are the superior computer to say Sony's(since sony seems to run cheaper for the bang). Thanks for the help.

Here's CNET's editor's choices.

HP jumps out. Good price and don't seem to skimp, though take a close look.

I work for the graduate business school at a large university. We have a laptop requirement for our students and the students are given the option of a Dell or an IBM Thinkpad. About 75-80% go with the Dell, even though it's more expensive. All of our faculty and some of our staff also have laptops and it's more like 80-90% Dell, with the same options.

All in all, we probably have about 600-800 Dell laptops floating around every day. Our help desk? We manage on 2 full-time guys and a couple of part-time guys. And that's for all the students, faculty, and staff. And if you ask them what kind of computer/laptop to buy, the don't hesitate a second to say, "Dell."

I made the same recommendation to my brother after he had all kinds of problems with a Compaq desktop. He's yet to have a single problem with his Dell laptop.

FWIW, I'm typing this on a Dell Latitude D600 with no major upgrades (like screen or whatnot) and it's perfectly fine. My girlfriend uses it all day at work (as her primary computer) with no problem.

My IT guy says Dell's quality is starting to slip lately, though they are still buying them.

Well, my personal laptop is a Toshiba Qosmio and it's a beast. Probably a bit more than you want to pay though. I've used a Dell C600 laptop at work for the past 4 years with hardly any issues. A lot of folks have Thinkpads and seem to like them pretty well.

I'll echo Tree's comments above - cheap laptops are cheap for a reason.

My officemate raves about the great service she recieved from Fujitsu. I haven't heard anyone rave about service in so long, I assumed it was a thing of the past.

Alright folks, I could use a little help here.

In your opinion, what is the best top two or three laptops for under $2000? And for under $1000?

Would Dell be worth looking into?

Reading above, looks like most would tell you to go with Dell.
I'm not a big fan of Dell.
My son had one and would never own another.

Agreed that all brands can have issues.

Government only buys Dell laptops here on the base, where I work.

Seems like somebody near me is having a laptop worked on every day.

I have an HP right now and am very content with it.

Do agree with somebodies comment from earlier about price though.

Recommend you go with right around 1000 or higher.

Don't think you get the bang for the buck going cheaper.

Hope this helps a little.

Do some online searches for ratings.
Especially user ratings.
Just make sure it does everything you want.

As far as what you get and the price, I really like HP for desktop and laptop.

Acer has been my laptop of choice so far. I have one, my parents have one each, as does my sister and 3 of my friends. Not one of us have had any hardware issues at all with ours. The HP my mom had for work and the Dell my friend bought were both utter crap imho.

Not a very big sample of course.

Acer laptops page.

TravelMate 4400, my dads. Probably one of the best bangs for the buck out there. Got him this one for 1300$ Cdn.

Ferrari 4000, mine: Got this one for 2100$ Cdn, probably the best gaming laptop out there. I'm not a huge car enthusiast but the Ferrari look is still pretty cool. :)
