Alright, last night when I was out, we had a nice thunderstorm and we lost power and my computer got cut off.
We've got a cable modem (Comcast I've been on hold now for 82 minutes!!!) and a router for the other computer. The other computer is working fine, but my main computer cant connect to the internet now. I checked the IP address through network settings and noticed it got set back to all 0's. So I don't know what I need to do...can anyone help?????? |

XP?
Shell out to DOS and type IPCONFIG /RENEW
Almost sounds like the cable modem might need to be reset.

XP
but why would it be working on the one computer and not the other???
I do remember way back when going through a dos prompt type box. I'm not at home right now, but I'll give it a try when I get home. Thanks RSF...

When I used a router my config settings also had a release/renew button that solved that problem.

My config settings have the same--look for the release/renew button in your settings/control panel of the cable modem.

Do a IPCONFIG /ALL and report what it says.
Also, check to see that the card is in the Hardware Manager list and OK.

ok, so I got a network cable from work (I can keep it!!!)
But I now need to go buy a network card right? Because there's nothing on my computer that this sucker can plug into right now. Then I can just plug this network cable to the router, then into my computer with my new network card and I should be good to go!!!!! (right????) :)

How did you have it hooked up before, if you didn't have a network card/cable hookup?

But yeah, if your motherboard doesn't have a network port on it you'll need a network card, that'll go in one of your PCI ports.

I had a USB cable going from the cable modem to my computer. Then a network cable from the modem to the router and another cable from the router to THIS computer.
So, I put in the network card and it seems that my computer wont recognize it now. XP is supposed to recognize that new hardware is installed, but it isn't. I give up. I've got a friend coming over tomorrow who is a Mr Fix it. I hope he can fix it!!!!!
Thanks for the help last night RSF, but I cant stay up late enough to work with you again tonight!!!! :)
