0 Subject: Powerpoint with linked background music

I'm assembling a powerpoint slide show for a friend's "This is your life" surprise party, and I have a bunch of background music files (mp3) linked to different slides.

It all works great when run from the computer on which I developed it, but I'd like to be able to put it on a CD so that I can give it to him afterwards and he can play it on his own.

The problem is that the sound files are linked to the presentation, and if the ppt file and the associated mp3 files are all copied to a different computer, the linked names of the files no longer work.

I tried embedding the sound files in the presentation itself, but they are so large that they slow down the execution too much.

Can I somehow burn the ppt file and the sound files on a CD so that the presentation could be played directly from the CD? I'm having trouble figuring out how to get the proper links inserted. I could first burn the mp3 files to the CD, and then link the ppt to them, and then copy the ppt file to the CD, but I think that would only work on another computer if the drive letter of the CD was the same as it is on my computer.

Anyone have any experience doing this? Or have any other suggestions on how to approach it?

Guru,

Can you put this on a DVD instead of a CD?

have you tried windows moviemaker? It's a simple app that works well. Better than powerpoint.

Sorry I didn't finish...

I believe moviemaker is included with XP. When I purchased my PC 2 years ago I found this app by fluke. (I was also trying to use powerpoint for a b-day presentation).
You can create a movie by importing pictures and music. You can time each picture to the music manually or the program can auto time it.
cool features such as titles, credits, fade in's etc are also included.

My PC was also bundled with a partial copy of Sonic DVD creator.
Moviemaker saves it in windows media format and from there I used Sonic to format to DVD style. I was able to create a DVD with an opening menu and outtakes.

[1] - I could put it on a DVD. In some ways, that might even be preferable, since anyone could presumably play it back on a DVD player. I don't think I have any decent software to do it directly on the computer, but I do have a DVD recorder, so I suppose I could just play the presentation directly into the recorder.

[2] - I'm not familiar with moviemaker, and already have the show pretty much assembled in powerpoint, so I'm not crazy about starting from scratch.

How do I access MovieMaker? I have XP Pro with SP 2, so it seems that it's included in there somewhere - but I can see how I access it.

Or do I have to download it separately?

I have moviemaker located under Accessories/Entertainment

c:\program files\movie maker\moviemk.exe

or you could do a search a find the moviemaker executable: moviemk.exe

Found it, thanks. That may be the best way to record it for distribution - although I guess I'll have to manually convert all of the powerpoint slides into image files in order to import them into moviemaker.

Here's my very first attempt at it:
One song, a few, titles, and lots of imported pictures with different effects. Took about 2 hours to complete, most of it was learning how the techniques worked and getting the timing down.

Guru,

When you moved you ppt files to another computer, Did you move the mp3 files also?

My son had to do several Powerpoint projects for school. And all we did was make sure that the slides and mp3 files were all in the same folder, and then burned then to a CD.

We took the CD to another computer and worked like a charm.

Yes, I did move the mp3 files. They were in a separate folder, but it was a subfolder of the directory with the ppt file.

That seems to work, though. Perhaps it works if the sound files are all in the same folder as the slide show, but doesn't work if they are in a separate folder - even if that folder is a subfolder of that same directory.

That solves my primary problem, but I'm still going to explore the Movie Maker alternative. Thanks for all of the suggestions.
