0 Subject: Internet Troubles

I recently changed computers with a lady at work, and I had to switch the ethernet card from my old computer to my new computer.

My computer is hooked up to the router, and everyone else is connected via wireless. Everyone has internet connectivity except me. Do I need to set up a new connection for my computer?

Does your computer "see" the network? If not, it may be a driver for the ethernet card needs reinstalling. If it sees the network but cant get you to the i-net, then run your i-net connection wizard. Most likely, a missing protocol. (At least from my past experience.)

Alright...I will try that when I get into work today. Thanks for the advice.

Ok...installed the driver, but it didn't help. On the internet icon thing it says: Local Area Connection: A network cable is unplugged.

Staying with the "KISS" theory...

Have you physically checked your connections? Make sure the plug-in for your network cable, is secure at both ends. (In your ethernet card and into your router.)

Assuming that to be the case, when you look at the back of your computer, is there a light on your ethernet card that is lit up? Most all of them I am semi-familiar with, will have an indicator light. (Lights up Red or Green.) If its red, or nit lit at all...then it could be that the ethernet card isnt seated firmly or that the card is bad. If its green, then the cards seating and power are good.

Its been awhile since I've done much trouble shooting on a network conneciton, so I;m afraid that I'm not gonna be much help if its more than what I have indicated above. I simply havent kept up with the OS beyond the days of win98.

I'll throw out the real obvious one.

If it is saying a network cable is unplugged, check the card like sarge said.
If it is green, probably one of two things.
A bad cable or a bad plug.

Try another cable and another plug.

It is green. And it worked in my old computer. I am just wondering, do I somehow have to set up a new connection under my internet connections?

Thats entirely possible. I'd try that, before resorting to replacing the network cable. (I know it worked in the other PC, but you never know who might have stepped on it or set something on it and broken a wire inside it. Oddball things like that happen and cause the cable to lose continuity.)

Nothing seems to work. Looks like I need to get someone in here who knows what they are looking for...

Thanks for the help!

sorry it didnt produce any results. BUt unfortunately, we havent been on a network at home in a couple years, and my network troubleshooting skills have fallen dramatically as a result. :(

Just got back from vacation, and I'm in the same situation.

My computer no longer accesses the internet on the windows side, though it is working fine on the linux side, as you can see. So it's not the cables.

My first thought was the house-sitter, but the setup looks unchanged. Maybe a windows update or a lack there-of?

I'd guess bili, that you have a corrupted driver then in your windows. SInce it works from Linux, its apparent the hardware is not an issue.
