0 Subject: Router issue

Several months ago, I installed a Linksys Cable/DSDL VPN router. It serves as a hardware firewall, and also allows me to have two home computers both connected to the internet simultaneously.

As I recall, I was pretty much able to plug it in out of the box and go. I didn't need to do any setup. I have an installation CD, but as I recall, I didn't even need it. (It's possible my memory is failing in that regard, however.)

Once it was installed, the only drawback I noticed was that it took about 30 seconds to connect to any of my servers via my FTP program. Previously, the connection was almost instantaneous once the program was launched. But once the connection was established, all file transfers still went through fine, without delay. So I figured I'd put up with the delay. (I did look briefly at the User Guide CD. but didn't see anything obvious to so about it.)

This morning, however, I was unable to upload any files via FTP. I am able to connect to a server using my FTP program, and I can execute other functions via this connection (e.g., delete files, rename files), but I cannot upload a file. The process starts and then immediately hangs.

The same thing happens from either of my 2 computers. However, if I connect to the internet via a dialup connection, I can transfer without problem - from either machine.

Thus, it would that the common denominator is the router. For some reason, the router seems to be blocking any file uploads.

And then, in trying to post this message, I have discovered that the router is also blocking this transmission. Again, I have to use my dialup connection to get through. I can access web pages normally, but I apparently cannot send info via a POST command.

I haven't yet spent much time trying to debug the router, but I thought I'd throw this issue out the to forum to see if anyone has any thoughts, and could at least point me in a good direction to explore.

Ugh...

BTW, I thought afterwards that perhaps it was a cable modem or an ISP issue. But when I disconnected the router and connected the computer to the cable modem directly, everything works fine. So the router really does appear to be the culprit.

I'm not too knowledgeable with routers, but have you looked at your router settings? To get to them just type in 192.168.1.1 in a browser, and input the ID and pw that should be in your manual.

Also, without knowing which router you have I can only list Linksys's products. Each one has a user manual online, and there is a help section that you could peruse. Sorry I could be more helpful, but routers are something I gave up fiddling with a while ago. ;)

What OS are you using? Windows 98? XP? Sounds like the Router may have a port closed that needs to be opened, among other possibilities.

One computer has Windows 98, the other XP Pro. The symptoms on both computers seem to be the same.

I am able to transmit small files, but hangs up when sending anything of even modest size. For example, I find that I can successfully send a small email that says only test, but a longer email gets stuck.

A short (several byte) file can be uploaded via FTP, but not a moderately sized one.

Short URL requests will work, but I can't run the sortable stats by hitting the go button, because evidently the URL string (e.g., http://rotoguru1.com/cgi-bin/stats.cgi?pos=0&sort=4&game=s&colA=0&daypt=0&denom=0&xavg=0&inact=0&maxprc=99999&listnum=y) is too large.

"One computer has Windows 98, the other XP Pro. The symptoms on both computers seem to be the same."

I had a very similar problem with my home network. We use it to share files, gaming lan, printers, and the internet. Our Gateway laptop ran Win98 Second Edition and our Dell desktop runs WinXP Home.

Initially the home network worked fine, but every few days I'd have to reconfigure the laptop to connect to the network. I had the same problem on both computers as well. One would see the other, but not vice versa.

My router has both computers, the cable modem, and my PS2 hooked up to it. I knew it wasn't the router because I could play the PS2 online easily.

I upgraded the laptop to WinXP Home and I haven't had a problem since. I highly recommend you upgrade the Win98 computer to WinXP Pro.

I would try that as well, although in theory it probably isn't what is causing your problem. Windows 98 though is a very weak OS for networking. WinXP Home or Pro will do, they're both pretty much the same thing.

Guru, it could be that you need to put a static IP address in on the computer that is not the "server." If the IP address is wandering and temporarily disconnecting it could cause interruption.

After checking out the support forums at comcast, it seems most likely that the problem is with Comcast, not me. Other comcast users seem to be having similar issues.

Nothing to do now but wait it out, I guess.

Yeehaw! I'm not sure exactly whose fault this is, but I was able to compensate for it for the time being.

Here is a thread at dslreports.com with a diagnosis and a few suggested workarounds. I was able to fix my problem by setting the MTU on my router to 576.

If you don't have a router, you may be able to work around the problem using DrTCP software.
