0 Subject: Burning Vinyl to CD?

Is this possible?

If so, are there places that will do this?

I have a very rare LP I'd love to play on my CD player.

You can do it yourself if you have a turntable, a phono preamp,
a cord to connect the outputs of the preamp to your sound card
and software. If you are a Mac user Audacity is a terrific free
program that will convert the analog signals to digital and
enable you to split the recording into tracks. Depending on the
condition of the LP you may also want noise reduction software.
I've made red book CDs from a bunch of my old albums that
have not been released in digital form.

Works pretty much the same way in Windows but I don't know
the software at all. If you want to give it a shot I'd go to a
software store and ask them to show you their programs for
ripping and burning vinyl.

Excellent. Grab Audacity from the Sourceforge site - although
there are good programs like Peak LE, Audacity is free and does
everything you'll need and does it well.

Remember that you'll need a phono preamp to amplify the analog
signal before you rip it to your hard drive. A lot of receivers,
integrated amps and preamps made today don't have a phono
preamp -- if you borrow someone's turntable they'll certainly have
some gear that contains what you need.

Why am I thinking all you need is:

If you don't have a turntable and have a lot of LP's to burn there are a few USB turntables out there that you can connect direct to your computer. I'm seriously considering one myself. Amazon has one for $150.

Balrog,

I got a USB turntable for xmas and have been converting vinyl ever since. The one I received was the Ion USB Turntable. It's not overly sturdy, but for the decent price and the USB connectivity, it's more than fine. No pre-amp needed since it connects directly to your computer, and it came with Audacity, the software Mark L mentions earlier.

It's great for just transfering music to wav or MP3 formats, but if you want individual tracks, you'll need to convert each individual track file. And if you're big on MP3 file tags, you'll need to do a little work there as well. It's a process, but more than that, it's a labor of love. At least if you're as attached to your vinyl as I am. (Even more so if your other turntable's been busted for 10 years, like mine!)

I ripped a bunch of vynl tracks a few years ago using a very old turntable that I really doubt had a preamp. Just used a Y-cable (RCA jacks on one end connect to the phono and 1/8 jack on the other end into the sound input on the back of the tower) and recorded with Windows Media Player. I do remember turning up the recording level. They ripped fine. I still listen to those tracks.

All the above advice depends on how concerned you are with the quality of the recording. If your not overly concerned with the fidelity, background noise etc, the advice above is fine.

If you want to make truly high fidelity recordings you'll need to invest in a decent preamp, turntable and a quality sound card, the better the preamp and sound card, the better the final product will sound.

Or you can go to Soulseek (peer to peer downloading site) and download the tracks since you have already paid for the recording once and in my opinion are morally justified to a digital copy of something you've already paid for but that's for you to decide.
