I recently purchased a new laptop and I want to add it my home network.

Currently, I have two PCs, a cable modem, and a wireless-g access point connected to my router and things work well enough to my satisfaction with the only slight problem being that I can't get one computer to see the other even though the other pc sees it just fine.

My XBox360 connects to my Windows Media Center PC thru the wireless access point.

What I want to do is have my laptop be able to print to the printer. I could really care less about file sharing (although it would be nice) with the laptop.

For the life of me I cannot get the wireless-g enabled laptop to hookup to the printer. The printer is plugged directly into one of the PCs.

I thought that since the printer runs through the PC which is connected to the router which is connected to the access point that I'd be able to hook it up. Especially since the other PC connected via the router prints just fine.

Since the network is working to my satisfaction I really don't want to upset the apple cart so I don't want to try anything rash like reinstalling anything or whatnot.

I noticed at Best Buy that there are wireless-g USB 2.0 jump drives. Could I plug this jump drive into the PC my printer is plugged into and setup a second wireless network?

My laptop runs Windows Media Center. The printer is an HP PhotoSmart 2610 All-In-One.

Thanks.

If you run the network setup wizard, one of the questions is whether you want to share printers.

If you re-run it that might solve you problem.

Other things you should check is whether you have the printer driver installed on the laptop.

If you go to the computer with the printer attached, right click on hard drive in my computers, and click the share.

Then go to network connections.
Entire network.
Home.
The computer with the printer.
Click on the printer, and it should install the driver automatically.

Good luck.

Boxman,

See if there is a firewall turned on the Pc that has the printer attached. If there is turn it off and then see if you can access the printer

Windows will have one and if you have something like norton it will have one aswell

Thanks for the tips guys. This is how I fixed it.

I had a print server laying around from an old network config I was using. I hooked the printer up to the that. I tried to find the printer on the network with the laptop but to no avail.

Then, I installed the driver for the printer on the laptop. I have no idea why I needed to do that, but it did the trick. The install process found the printer on the network and now it works.

I thought that the Windows process would've at least have found the printer, but I guess I was wrong.
