0 Subject: MS IE 6.0 and MS Word 2007 Compatibility Issue

My new Gateway computer (with XP--see previous posts) came preloaded with MS IE 6.0 and MS Word 2007, and I have the strangest problem. The spell check on IE checks in FRENCH, and it not possible to change it to English. Everything else on the entire system is in English. I went through my system and setting with Gateway tech support, and the problem could not be repaired. They claim that it is an incompatibility issue between MS IE 6.0 and MS Word 2007. They even found an article on MS's website supporting this but offering no patch or solution. Gateway claimed that reinstalling the OS would be of no help. Microsoft offers no support referring me to the vendor, i.e., Gateway, for help. I am not fabricating this, and I find it exceptionally hard to believe.

Wow. My advice would never use IE again.

Getting started using Firefox.

I would also recommend never using XP or Word again, though I haven't yet started practicing what I preach (dratted software availability issue), so Firefox for now.

The problem with Foxfire is that the email is web based which is very inconvenient. Wilkepedia has a good section of the pros and cons of web based email.

Sorry, Loki. I don't know what you are talking about. Perhaps it's your terminology.

IE is a web browser. It's companion (non-web-based) email is MS Outlook.

Firefox is a web browser. It's companion (non-web-based) email is
Thunderbird. I use it, but I am reluctant to recommend it, because I've had problem or two with it. I think it's pretty good overall, however.

Either of these web two browsers can be used to check email from a dedicated website as well.

Loki - What do you mean that the email is web based ? Firefox has it's own email client simular to outlook express.

I got my information/misinformation from Wilkepedia. Any possible solution to the IE problem?

I had a similar problem, installed EVERYTHING 2007 except for Outlook because we used Exchange 5.5 which is not compatible with outlook 2007...

My solution was to re-install the spell checker for my Outlook, so I just re-installed checker files and it fixed it.

Your solution might be a little different, I would try the following. Find an old version of Office and re-install the proofing tools.
try this link, I know you dont use outlook but they use the same spell checker... let us know which works for you...

1. Re-install IE 6.0, make sure you go through the advanced options and proofing tools and check for spell checks and such...

2. Upgrade to IE 7.0, this will for sure fix your issue.

let me know if you have any questions.

I realize that my solution might seem weird, since you are using IE 6.0 and Office 2007. But the problem is, IE 6.0, outlook, word, outlook express, and all those other M$ products use the same proofing tools...

IE 6.0 was bundled with your OS, it is ALSO bundled with Previous versions of office... When you install any office software or anything the proofing tools are updated and changed.

In the case of Office 2007, the problem lies with the proofing tools being stripped off and defaulted to French.

The only way is to install the proofing tools again. So if you have an old Office disk then my link above would work, if you don't, I'd try installing IE 6.0 and looking for proofing tools, or try IE 7.0...

Matt G-Thanks for the advice. I am leaning towards downloading IE 7.0. I believe that it has been out for about a year (correct me if I am wrong) , and thus most of the bugs should have been repaired.
What I find most strange about this issue is that MS did not immediately come out with a patch since this must affect a large number of machines. Defaulting to French?? Why not English or any one of a hundred other languages?

I couldn't find any real reason why French or why no fix...

Really, the issue first came to Light with Outlook Express, because it was not upgraded with Office 2007.

But the problem is pretty wide spread. The proofing tools become corrupt, so a re-install is necessary...

I can't guaruntee that IE7 will work, I just know that my pcs with Office 2007 and IE 7 are working fine.

Interesting that you posted this today because I just finished installing the spell check program from MS Works Suite 2002. This solved the problem. I still find it very strange that MS has not yet distributed a patch for this issue. Perhaps I should have listened to my kids a purchased a Mac.

I would definitely upgrade to IE 7. No problems at all with it, and it has all the features that I like about Mozilla. My laptop came with IE 7 so I use that there, and Mozilla on my PC, and they're both practically the same.

I was unable to use an online application from MS Office 2007 because MS read my computer as having an unauthorized version of MS Word 2002 even though it was my own copy from my old computer. The problem was solved by uninstalling the spell check program from Word 2002, but I was left with a French spell checker for IE 7.0. Suggestions are welcome.
