so, i'm not even quite sure what i'm asking.

i basically borrow my landlord's internet access. he's got wireless, and i've got network adapter to use his signal.

but sometimes, it doesn't seem to "connect".

it's not incrypted, i'm definitely getting a signal and information is transfering, but my browser will sometimes say it can't find the server, and thusly, i can't get online.

related to this - my gmail notifier says something about DNS and servers and such.

i'm woefully ignorant. what does this mean, why is it doing it, and what can i do to "fix" it when it happens?

thanks!

Whenever I can't connect to wireless, it is a signal problem...

Something you may want to look at, cordless phones, not necessarily cellular, but the cordless units that operate at the 2.4 GhZ frequency will interfere with your wireless signal...

The way to fix this is, change the channel on your wireless router... Defaults are usually 11, I would change it to 6 and try that, and if that doesn't work 1... but, since its not your router.

Change the channel on your wireless phone, this isn't as effective as the channels on most cordless phones USUALLY when you change them just skip to the next clearest channel, and won't try them all... So if you have 3 clear channels 2 of them might actually interfere with your internet. In fact only channels 1,6, and 11 are not linked on your wireless internet, so if your phone hits 11,10,8, well it interferes with 11 on each of them...

As for your DNS, that's probably because of not being connected all the time...

DNS = Domain Name Servies... it is how your comptuer, and GMAILs servers know that www.gmail.com is actually 209.85.133.83. When your browser says it can't access the DNS server, blah blah blah, that is just saying, you don't have internet, in most cases...

In some cases it's a lot more technical... in your case, i think its the wireless problem you have.

possibly, open a CMD prompt.
STart-run, CMD click ok.
type ipconfig /release
hit enter
type ipconfig /renew
hit enter and close

thats about all i can give ya... let me know how it goes.
