Hey guys, hoping someone might be able to help me here. Ive tried using IE and mozilla, but there are certain sites which i cannot open. I know the sites are working, as ive spoken to other people who have opened them with no trouble. One example is www.fromthestretch.com
Would this be a web browser problem, something in the settings maybe been changed, or possibly a virus?
On the topic of viruses, can someone recoment a good one to use, at the moment ive just got symantec running.
Thanx

What kind of message are you getting (if any) when you go to those sites?

For viruses, I no longer use Norton myself since it turned out to me such a huge resource hog! For anti-Virus I use Avast, plus a couple of other programs for anti-spyware.

On a few of them, i dont really get an error message, it sometimes just takes me to a google search of that website. Then when i click on the right link i get that usual "Internet explorer cannot display the webpage" with others, it goes straight to that page.
Its been like this for about 12 hours now. Im about to run adaware and spybot and see if that brings anything.
The only other thing i could think of doing was rebooting and and resetting the modem, in case it was just my internet playing up.
Ill try avast when this stuff stops scanning.
Thanx

I use AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5.467. It's free and for me it's worked better than the ones I paid for.

I don't know why you can't access that site, but it's not because of a virus. In IE you can go to tools / internet options and check a couple things:
1) Security - I run mine at default medium, but maybe yours is rated higher. Probably not the problem anyway.
2) Content - If you've enabled ratings for specific content maybe it's blocking the sight. Again, probably not the problem because I have no problem getting to it from my work computer.

Is this a work computer issue versus you have no problem getting to those sites from home?

I might just be a simple cache problem and your computer isn't loading the newest version of the page. It couldn't hurt to try this:
1. Start Internet Explorer 7, click Tools, and then click Delete Browsing History.
2. Next to Temporary Internet Files, click Delete files, and then click OK.
3. Next to History, click Delete history, and then click OK.
4. Next to Form data, click Delete forms, and then click OK.

I definitely suggest running the adaware and spybot, but if none of these fix the problem I'm sure someone with much more computer savvy will come along and help you out on this.

You should probably do a Microsoft Update as well, to make sure you have their most updated anti-spyware running as well.

Thanx for the help TB, i usually just do "delete all"
Nah, this isnt at work, this is my home pc, thats whats worse about it. Spybot is still running, but so far only one thing: WindowsSecurityCenter.AntiVirusOverride
That sounds bad, lol.

That doesn't sound good, but hopefully you've somehow just changed a setting in your security center and don't have a virus that is doing it.

Go to Control Panel / Security Center / and then click on "Change the way Security Center alerts me" and make sure all three are checked and press okay.

Yea, everything is checked. Though this is another recurring problem with that, every so often it comes up saying That the virus scanner is installed, but the status is unknown.
Oh well. Gotta try download either AVG or Avast now. I had avg on my old system, that seemed to work well for me there.

Do you think it would be wise to download the avg Anti-Rootkit aswell? Its the first ive heard of it, not sure how effective it actually is.

I've never tried it, but I think I would go to another forum to get these questions asked.

http://www.windowsbbs.com/

I googled WindowsSecurityCenter.AntiVirusOverride earlier and find this thread from that site: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=47957. It was dealing with a much larger issue, but I read along and saw the support he got from that site.

Thanx, checking out that site now. Also another strange thing happens. I dont use Outlook, ever. But someone else, mum/dad, no clue sometimes does. When they open it, it automatically opens AIM messenger aswell. I just opened it then myself, then i got all this malware warnings come up from avg aswell. I think it removed, so that was alright.
