Subject: Digital Cameras?

I think I'm going to finally get around to buying a digital camera since I'm driving out across the country in a few days, but I have absolutely no idea what kind to get. And I'm also cheap. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good, relatively inexpensive (maybe 150 and under, preferrably even lower) camera? It would be a plus if it could create videos with sound. I'll probably head over to Best Buy or Circuit City tomorrow. |

Ignore "digital zoom" ratings. Optical zoom is much more important. If you're not the type of person who will photoshop your photos, optical zoom is also much more important than number of megapixels.

There is a diminishing return with the number of megapixels you have. I bought my wife a camera a while back and I think it's 7.2 megapixels. It's above 7 for sure. We could print posters with that resolution if we so desired. We never do though. It was way too much camera for our needs.
For your standard 3x5, 5x7, etc. I'm sure a 4 or 5 megapixel (maybe even less) camera would do.
Surprisingly the people at Best Buy knew a lot about cameras when I was looking for one.

Also be aware of what memory card the camera will take and the battery issue with that particular camera. Can you recharge the battery pack, or does it use AAA / AA batteries. Really an issue depending on # of pictures you are taking and flash usage. I really ate up the battery pack quick when we were in Carlsbad Caverns and every picture needed the flash.
Ditto on the megapixels issue from above. Most anything I print is 4x6, and very little if any difference between 4 and 7 megapixels.
Enjoy the trip.
I was real worried about the small size of some of the cameras, but am real happy with mine.
Spent more than you are looking to though.
But, there are a lot in the lower price range that you will be happy with.
I would really look for one that uses an SD card.
Off brand SDs at 2 Gigs are usually a pretty good price now also.

I would highly recommend dpreview.com Good unbiased reviews of cameras. It also has a nice filter feature if you want to see what fits your criteria, i.e. do you want to have manual aperature and exposure control, SLR vs Point and Shoot, price.
Give it a try.

Many cameras come with a small card and those same stores charge too much for a bigger one. It's often cheaper to get a better memory card somewhere else-----Costco and places like that run sales from time to time.

Thanks guys. I ended up going with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LS70S
I'm still not sure if the video mode has audio, didn't get to test it out yet. I thought I read a review where someone said it didn't, but the guy at the store said it did. Guess it wasn't a deal breaker, it seemed to be the only camera in that price range to get consistently good reviews.
I got a 2 gig SD card also for 20 dollars at circuit city, I still need to get the rechargeable batteries and charger though, Best Buy ran out.

I found that connector you were looking for Cindy, is this the thing you were looking for? www.liangdianup.com/computeraccessories_1.htm
It's on the list of computer accessories and parts. They have the DVI video thing to convert that jap monitor to work with your other computer. Just about any other kind of wire adaptor, usb connectors, monitor extension wires, ps2 extention wires, and all kinds of female and male swap connectors and things that I think would help your shop. If that above link don't work then goto www.lducompany.com and click on computer accessories. Let me know if that is what you need and give me your email address again.
