Subject: buying a computer

my wifes parents are looking to buy a computer, without the monitor. We were looking at this one. they use it for yahoo games and email and alittle surfing the web. Will this computer be ok for them?

I would probably add more RAM, if possible. 1GB is pretty small these days--maybe they can add more RAM at a small cost?
I've purchased refurbished computers in the past and have never had a problem. They are right that you can save some big bucks on refurbished comps from the exact same machines being sold as new.

Agreed on the extra RAM - especially if it's Vista. While Vista will run on 1GB of RAM, I've heard that it's noticeably slower with that config. Someone I trust has suggested that at least 2GB will make it run better.

I have bought 4 GW computers over the years, but when I went to buy another about a year ago, the customer service was so appallingly bad that I canceled my order.
I'd recommend another company. Any other company. We ended up buying a HP for my wife, and a smaller online company that builds to your specs for me.

I bought an HP for myself. The only problem i have with it is when i call for customer service. I never get a person that speaks English.

I admit to having a bias. I generally find all tech support to be a waste of time, these days. If something goes wrong, generally am going to fix it myself. If it's software, I often just wipe and start over. If it's hardware, I swap the piece out.
So I simply try and get the best built base machine I can find. That used to be Gateway. Then Dell. Then HP.
Now I don't trust any of them, so I went with a smaller outfit that cost a couple hundy more called Directron last time, and have been very happy.
I spent some time over at Reseller ratings before I bought.

I've had HP's that I loved but I had LOTS of technical problems. One I brought back to the shop 3 times. luckily I had an extended warrenty. Computers are one poduct extended warrenties are actually recommended for.
Don't over look Apple unless you are on a tight budget. I bought one last year and I don't think I can every go back. It just elevates the whole experience and this is coming from someone who used PC's 15 years.
I still have a PC and barely turn it on. I still get a special feeling when I turn on the Mac.
They aren't cheap though.

It's on the list of computer accessories and parts. They have the DVI video thing to convert that jap monitor to work with your other computer. Just about any other kind of wire adaptor, usb connectors, monitor extension wires, ps2 extention wires, and all kinds of female and male swap connectors and things that I think would help your shop.
