0 Subject: Upgrading and wondering how much trouble I'll have

if I simply take my old hard-drive and plug it into the new case/ps and mobo/cpu?

Existing system is an off-the-self Sony Vaio with Windows XP Media Center. Had a power spike the other day and it fried the PS. I've been looking to upgrade lately anyway, so this is a convenient excuse to go ahead and do so.

When the system boots, it will have entirely different busses, pipelines etc etc, due to the mobo switch. Then too, its going to be a much newer cpu than currently is there, and that may change some things in initialization as well I'd assume.

My thinking is, that the software with the new mobo, should include the necessary drivers for it. But will I be asking for trouble in simply over-writing what is already on the hard-drive from the old system? I'd like to keep the old OS, since it has all my bookmarks, PWs etc etc.

Sarge,
Will the new case have a hard drive with an o/s on it already in the computer.
If so, then just make it the master and your other drive the slave.
Otherwise, not sure what issues you will find or how hard they will be to correct.

Sarge, you've been married twice. You should know all about master & slave work.

At minimum, you'll have to call Microsoft and ask for a new activation number for your old XP. If you change more than a couple of major components, the old activation is removed. In your case, you are changing all but the drive. Other than that you may have some driver problems.

If it was me, I'd just start fresh. You'll have to reload all your old stuff, but it's bound to get rid of a lot of old drivers, etc., that you aren't using and that are slowing down the system.

Pretty much the conclusion I drew too. Ordered Vista for the new system (not that I wanted to, but all things are pointed in that direction, so.....)

Gonna slave the old drive at first and hope/pray I can move things like bookmarks/faves, cookies and the like to the new OS/Drive.

re 2....3 times. Some of us are slow learners. *shrug*
