I'm investigating phone options as a way to drop my internet based phone service via Cablevision "Triple Play" of phone/internet/cable.

Anyone out there tried some of these products before? Been looking at Vonage as well and T-Mobile "HotSpot" which you plug into your home router for 10 bucks a month. I would potentially get this if I switch to the G1 Google phone... but what about some of these guys? Like Ooma for $249 up front and no monthly fee after...

MagicJack or Ooma Phone System

I have a MagicJack that I am going to implement as my office line. I haven't used/tested it much yet, but it seems to work fine.

Thing with MagicJack is that its not a "standalone" device like with Vonage, but rather a USB device that needs to be plugged in to a computer that is always on.

I'm tempted to plug it into my server and then route the line back into the house-loop, so its available as a second-line throughout the whole house.

I also saw this, the GE Cell Fusion Cell Manager DECT 6.0 Phone System, that looks cool.

It connects bluetooth to your cellphone and allows multiple phones throughout the house. You can connect 2 cellphones to it, as well as landlines. You can have up to 6 handsets on the system. Kinda cool sounding and not horribly expensive.

I was wondering that about MagicJack, cause I doubt I want to leave my computer on all the time. Or if I went to bed it would kind of eliminate incoming calls, right?

Ooma seems pretty straightforward. You pay 250 up front for the box and it plugs into your router or whatever... just like Vonage. You get unlimited US calls, call waiting, voicemail and caller ID. Never pay a fee of any sort again. Just the large chunk up front.

My only fear is the company disappears in two years and I'm out in the cold.
