Subject: Unable to get to desktop in XP

My computer at work kept getting infected every week with trojans and worms. Yesterday it happened again. After the anti-virus(Symantec)deleted it, I went into RegEdit and deleted several values from the registry. I also restored 2 Winlogon entries to their previous values exactly according to the instructions. Problem is I did not backup the registry before doing this and now I'm stuck at the XP welcome screen. When I try to logon as myself or administrator it starts to load then logs back off immediately. I've already tried safe mode-same thing. Their is no floppy drive and the only cd-rom drive doesn't work either so I can't even do a clean install. Is there any way I can bypass the XP logon thru MS-Dos maybe and get to the desktop? If my boss wasn't my brother-in-law I'd probably already be fired. |

Try safe mode with command prompt and then at the command prompt type C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe which will bring up system restore and then restore it to a day before this happened

Sorry, forgot to mention that when this occured system restore was disabled per the advice from the antivirus removal. I tried safe mode with command prompt anyway and same thing-stuck at windows welcome logon screen.

Your next best step is boot off a windowsXP CD and go into recovery console. That will give you a command prompt. Google windows xp registry restore command prompt and there is a microsoft document that wll give you step by step directions to restore the registry
