0 Subject: Map Mash Up

I wasn't sure if this should go into the Excel thread because I don't know if this is an Excel solution.

I need an Excel template or a Word template or something free that will let me insert data onto a map of the United States. IT was saying to Google "Excel Mash Up" or "US Map Mash Up" and they're looking into it as well.

This could be done manually in Power Point with a map as an image with various text boxes overlayed onto the map but it would be a real pain in the butt especially with the New England states where I'd have to cite that data in the margin.

Any solutions? Thanks.

What are you entering into the excel spreadsheet? Street addresses, or co-ordinates?

Here's a decent link to get started. Geocoding

and another Batch Geocoding

I've created google maps via Excel that also contained some custom notes. It's been awhile and I'm far from an expert.

I have different analytical data by state: production, sales, etc that I'd like to present overlayed onto a map of the US.

I've asked my sister the geographer if she knows how to help you. I'll let you know when she gets back to me.

And here's how she responded:

It sounds like Frick might have given him a good option to start with. I'm thinking since he doesn't have mapping software, that he is stuck with an image & needing to do the overlay like he mentioned in his initial question. Of course the big question he is asking is how to do the overlay. He has a valid point in that the New England area is going to be PITA because of the smaller states, so he might need to do something with a corresponding table for that area (where he places a table in the corner near the NE, and has a heading for each state with the data below it).

I'm not sure there is an easier way to do it without mapping software.

Here is a link I found on how to create a Google map mashup.... seems pretty easy. The biggest thing he would probably need in his data is a single Lat/Long (typically from the center) for each state to put in his Excel data. He can get this from Google map.

Hope this helps.

I don't remember exactly where I found the links (different computer), but it allowed you to add custom fields into the Excel sheet that then posted them to a google map. I think the first link has an example spreadsheet.

At the time it was public info which led to bit of a problem when someone stumbled across it.
